Basic Description: Gerard works as a healer in a small mountain village. He is very intelligent, and generally pretty shy around new people, but a little less reserved once he opens up. He also has aerokinetic abilities, though he tries not to use them often.
Backstory

Gerard was born in the small town of Saylen, which also serves as the headquarters to a supremacist group known as the Patrol. The Patrol believes in the eradication of people with abilities, so from a young age Gerard was exposed to hatred and harsh opinions towards those with abilities. Gerard, like many others, wasn't born with his abilities, but he was still really upset by the way his family and other people in his town treated those who were different. Gerard grew to be very close with his mother. She was the only one who seemed to disagree with the Patrol's radical beliefs, and she supported Gerard for doing the same.
However, everything changed for Gerard when he was only seven. His mother became very ill one day, and died only a week later. Following the death of his mother, Gerard's father and his older brothers began to bully him. It started out with them calling him names or making fun of him, but when they realized that Gerard wouldn't defend himself their hostile behaviour towards him increased. Without his mother to turn to, Gerard just took the beatings.
When Gerard was eleven he developed his powers. He knew that his father would kill him if he ever found out, so Gerard did his best to keep his abilities secret. During this time Gerard became increasingly depressed. It only worsened when he turned fourteen and Gerard was forced to be initiated into the Patrol. The initiation process involved killing one of the Patrol's prisoners, which was always an individual with powers. The idea sickened him and in the weeks leading up to the initiation, he contemplated taking his life but was unable to go through with it. When the day of his initiation finally came, Gerard was unable to go through with killing the prisoner. His father killed the prisoner for him, and Gerard cracked from all the stress he was under and accidentally revealed his power to his father. His father was furious with him. He tortured Gerard before locking him in his room while he decided what to do with him.
That night, Gerard escaped by climbing out of his bedroom window. He eventually got to a river with a strong current. Gerard wasn't a strong swimmer, but he had to run away from home... or die trying. He tried to cross the river, but was eventually dragged under by the current where he nearly drowned. Luckily for Gerard, two escaped prisoners spotted him and rescued him. For a while, Gerard was wary of the prisoners and didn't trust them. When he eventually learned that they both had abilities like him, he eventually grew to trust them more. He later learned that the prisoners were heading to a safe haven, and when they learned about Gerard's abilities they invited him along.
When Gerard arrived in New Vellarton (the safe haven) he was determined to keep his dark past behind him. He grew to be very close with Alexis, one of the prisoners who helped rescue him. Gerard worked alongside Alexis as a healer. Gerard enjoyed working as a healer, as he felt like it was a way of making up for things that happened in his past. While working as a healer, Gerard became fascinated with all the different powers that he came across. He eventually started doing some research in the hopes that he could figure out the origins of his abilities.
Personality
Gerard is a very timid individual. He'd much rather fly under the radar than be at the center of attention. However, he is very kind, and doesn't mind helping others. Gerard is quite intelligent and also very curious, which are two traits that help him with his research and with his main job as a healer. He is a hard worker and is very loyal to the people he is close with.
Because of his dark past, Gerard is very nervous and paranoid. He has a hard time trusting others and is often very opposed to any kind of change even when it could benefit him. He also is very opposed to any kind of violence, and as a result he doesn't always stick up for himself. He also has a tendency to avoid problems rather than facing them.
Relationships with other characters
Crispin: Gerard was initially a very intimidated by Crispin due to his aggressive tendencies. However, once he got to know him better, he found that Crispin was actually a pretty decent person. While the two never really hit it off as best friends, they did become fairly close despite their differences.
Spencer: Gerard first met Spencer when he came in as one of his patients. Spencer had been injured badly by the Patrol, and Gerard worked closely with him while he helped him get better. Gerard initially tried to distance himself from Spencer and his sister, however when Spencer took interest in becoming a healer Gerard was willing to help mentor him.
Reid: Gerard was also a bit intimidated by Reid at first due to his very high social standing. He was also a bit put off by the way Reid seemed to always think he knew what was best for everyone. Gerard eventually does gain some respect for Reid and does end up supporting (some) of his ideas.
