Lifestyle

He makes enough Silvence to get by and gives anything remaining to those around him. He is very picky about who he eats (when it comes to mortals) and what he eats (when it comes to food). At Tsotska d'la Mer, he hunted to repay Iapetus for their help. He also took over their hatchery for a time. After leaving the hatchery, he picks up what Silvence he can from mercenary jobs that align with his goals.

Traits

Marshasp is quite doubtful of everything. Instead of believing what he hears, he tends to investigate on his own. Before he bonded with dragons, this made it very difficult to form close relationships. Once the initial barrier is broken, he is incredibly loyal to others and will help them whenever he's called on.

Ideals and Likes

He believes Quetzalcoatl are closer to mortal than the stories would have them believe, and this has launched him into his current journey. He enjoys learning and life continues to surprise him, especially regarding Elemental Dragons and their magic. He likes listening to songs, be it Prospero, swallows singing, or crows making a ruckus. He also likes sitting in warm, sunny places and watching the sea. The sun was ephemeral in Teteocan, so it feels like a luxury, while a body of water as large as the sea is humbling to him. He has grown to like Prospero's cooking--but only Prospero's cooking.

Flaws and Fears

Marshasp finds it difficult to attach himself, and when he does, he tends to be clingy. He has claustrophobia that grows more intense as time goes on. While he is eager to learn, he tends to focus so much that he is oblivious to obvious things. While he enjoys changing himself, he is terrified of changing the world around him. He did not want to interject during his research at Teteocan, and even thinking about it gave him nightmares. Even remembering this, he gets homesick when he dwells on it. He is adamant about his ideals, to the point that he grew incredibly sick when he abstained from hunting people.

Bonds

His strongest bond is to Prospero, though he has difficulty sorting out which Prospero. He considers Kija and Iapetus as a new family and does their best to help them. In the Rebellion, he's indifferent towards most people, but repects Lloredo and is thankful that he can continue residing on the Seasonal Wind. Before arriving to Shérok, his closest bond was with his clutchmate Fen. It wasn't horribly close, but it was a friendship nonetheless.

Faith

As a Quetzalcoatl, he is a follower of the Goddess. Through their sacrifices and abilities, he is quite confident the Goddess exists. He does take issue with why they she so focused on sacrificing mortals. He intentionally does not pry into the religious aspect of things, instead focusing on the people that matter to him.

Language

Marshasp's mother tongue is Nahuatl. He has also learned Latin, Hanyu, English, and Arabi from Prospero. He had to learn Shéar but could otherwise integrate fine when he arrived on Shérok and Eredia. He has a noticeable snake-like accent when speaking Shéar.

Hatchery Work

When he took over Iapetus's Hatchery, he swooped out older eggs from Aurelia's Hatchery and held them for safekeeping. The assumption was that he would travel more than they would under Aurelia's care and could and would be able to locate Riders using his own intuition. While he doesn't have gold feathers, he can at least trust his gut feeling regarding eggs' Riders.

History

He once worked to sacrifice mortals for their souls' energy, assisting gold feathered Quetzalcoatl in their duties. Due to his curiosity, he explored the possibilities and uses of Quetzalcoatl blood; This led to him getting too fond of a particular subject named Prospero, and they eventually bonded. When other Quetzalcoatl learned of this, they nearly killed Prospero, and Marshasp abandoned his duties to hopefully save him. Thanks to the nature of the Chronoscape, he can take his time to improve his skills and strength, returning only when he thinks he can save Prospero.

Of course, growing strong enough to outsmart two other Quetzalcoatl isn't easy. He eventually finds himself on Shérok, taking care of a dragon he never thought he could bond with, seeking out everything he could learn about the magic of the world. From elemental dragon magic to Ere spells to Irrit charms, he does his best to learn them all. A person that looks and feels exactly like Prospero appears, though he has a completely different past and even different dragons to the ones he knows. This Prospero gives him the name Ezra Lewis as a way of distinguishing himself from the other. Seeing as they bonded once already, it was a matter of time before their romance sparked again.

Once more, it couldn't be that simple. They were separated and Marshasp was plunged into a bitter hatred of the world, seeking vengeance however he could against his fellow Quetzalcoatl, the slave traders of Shérok, the nobility of Eredia and the Abrendese, and anyone who looked at him crossly. He easily fit in among the Shéar Rebellion, though his interests laid more in causing suffering than ending it.

Abilities

Green-feathered Magic

His green feathers allow him to create venoms for all kinds of purposes. He is mainly familiar with bloodletting and otherwise deadly venoms, easily manufacturing them with limited resources. Given enough preparation, though, he can imitate the venoms that other Quetzalcoatl made--healing medicines, intoxicating venoms, and so on. He is 'average' at green magic, but he can use his red magic to accelerate the effects of venom when needed.

Red-feathered Magic

This is his greatest form of magic. He can easily manipulate blood, create spell circles, and efficiently circulate blood for potential healing effects. Among his kind, he's quite talented at it, and very few people can read his more advanced spellwork. He decided to go the more 'peaceful' route and work with spell circles rather than hunting for the colony.

Tarot Reading

He received a tarot deck based around dragons of all types. Even the Quetzalcoatl appears. The ocean dragon, Leviathan, bequeathed it to him and offers her powers when he seeks knowledge of the future. Since he has very crummy gold magic, this is the easiest way for him to peer into the future--even if it is more vague than direct visions. He still isn't very good at reading them and needs help from either Prospero or Leviathan to glean deeper meaning.

Transformation

Like all Quetzalcoatl, Marshasp shapeshifts between his 'primitive' form and 'godlike' form. The forms vary depending on the preference and nature, so for him, his primitive form includes his talons, hind feet, wings, tail, and partial head feathers. In all forms, he tends to be smaller than others of his kind. His primitive form is a mere 6'3", while his largest form is barely that at the shoulder when standing upright. Due to his diet during portions of his life, it's unlikely that he will reach a larger size.

Intuition

While lacking in gold magic, he does wield the basic intuition of a serpent. This is called the 'Chronocompass' among other types of dragons. In addition to pointing him in the right direction and remembering time as a part of location, it gives him an incredibly accurate gut instinct. The most obvious way this manifests is detecting ill intentions or lies from others. At the same time, he believes his intuition to be 'broken' on some level, since it conflicted with Fen's often, and he is generally bad with gold feathered magic. The more subtle way this manifests is 'knowing' when an unclaimed egg's Rider is nearby.

Strength

Compared to other people, he's weak as hell. Compared to other Quetzalcoatl, he's very strong. He uses his red magic to give himself--and any hitchhikers--an upwards boost during flight. It allows him to convert physically taxing things into mentally taxing things. Embuing equipment with blood allows him to move swiftly and wield much heavier weapons than he can carry normally. He is still frail, like any other Quetzalcoatl, and can't push himself beyond a certain point without literally breaking things. That doesn't stop him from doing it from time to time.

Stowaways

Opossum, Pink Fairy Armadillo, Cuckoo, Sunstar, Cormorant, Arctic Fox, Horseshoe Crab, Feisty Fish

Koi Pond

A pool close to shore on Tsotska d'la Mer. It contains many fish that Iapetus have deemed sacred, for one reason or another. Marshasp just feeds them as directed.

Soft Bed

He sleeps on a thin cot placed a few inches off the ground with a small net to keep him from rolling off accidentally in rough seas. He has decorated it with feathers and cotton, but it otherwise is a mat without a blanket.

Star Chart

A star chart that he shares with Lloredo. He learned how to read it from the man and takes turns as navigator when one or the other is sleeping. He doesn't know as many locations as Lloredo, but he's doing his best to learn them. As it happens, stars are the only way to navigate to certain doors--technology is quick to falter when time warps, but the stars are not as malleable.

Diary

He keeps a large book bound himself, illustrated with pictures of dragons and stories that he has heard outside of Teteocan. He hopes to return with the stories to show the Quetzalcoatl what they are missing. Despite its size, the book quickly filled to the brim, and he now writes over them in various layers of blood with a slightly different composition. This makes it easy for him and other red-feathered Quetzals to read, but very creepy to anyone else who sees it.

Roulette

A set of tarot cards bequeathed to him by the Ocean dragon, Leviathan (albeit through a medium). Each card is dragon themed and has a rough equivalent in the more popular tarot decks. Marshasp needs help to find deeper meaning in the cards. Leviathan is well-versed in their use--and, perhaps, she is the one manipulating them. Prospero isn't a medium in the least, but he does recognize them from playing cards the poachers used and does his best to draw parallels to their fortune telling games.

Bird Feeder

The Seasonal Wind is diguised as a fishing vessel, and as such, has plenty of fishing nets. Lloredo is an excellent judge of the sea, so when they are acting the part, these nets tend to be bursting with fish as they're pulled aboard. Inevitably, the birds show up for a feast.

Weather Vane

There are several simple tools Lloredo uses to infer the weather. He lets Marshasp use them all the time, since he prefers using his eyes. Marshasp's preferred is an almanac detailing weather throughout the seasons.

Crystal Chandelier

A gift from both Iapetus and Prospero--an instrument resembling a violin, infused with blood. It's very easy to play and doesn't require a bow, though he tends to use it anyways. It is meant to help enhance dark and wind magic, but it tends to be his go-to distraction if he has to be at any social gatherings.

Tacklebox

A box containing a collapsable fishing rod that can handle smaller fish, a collection of nets, and quite a few lures. Attached to the side is something between a spear and a harpoon that Marshasp has more success using than the other tools.

Pet Pen

The dragons need very particular boarding. With all the hay, pillows, cotton, coal, dust, gemstones, and other assorted "needs" for the dragons laying around, it's only natural that other animals take up residence.

Pet Toys

Lloredo's jungle dragons can make a toy out of anything. That doesn't mean they will finish what they are making. There are half-completed feathers-on-strings, woven balls, and jingling contraptions stored in every small crevice exclusive to the little Jungles. They are there for "safe keeping" and for "when they'll finish it." The familiars have a fun time when these little projects are freed from underneath the chests and beds for them to play with.

Opossum

Prospero left offal to Caliban, and Caliban was not always diligent in his duties. That's where this opossum comes in. When the hatchery is abandoned, she follows Marshasp onto the Seasonal Wind.

Pink Fairy Armadillo

An exotic creature that escaped its cage and happened upon the Quetzalcoatl while he was half-awake. Marshasp grew fond of how cute it looked and paid off the "lost item" insurance so Lloredo would let him keep it.

Cuckoo

A delightful bird that follows Marshasp around and roosts wherever he happens to find his home. Of all the Familiars, this one seems to have an actual friendship, rather than a passing bond. Marshasp also enjoys the calls it makes in the morning.

Sunstar

This enigmatic familiar spends most of its time stuck to the bottom of the boat, feasting on the urchins and other poor creatures that cling to its sides. It's rumored that its intense magical aura drives away the focas. Marshasp is mainly confused at how it clings on the bottom of the ship, but he won't ask questions as long as the creature helps with the ship maintenance.

Cormorant

This creature could be closer to the ship than he is to Marshasp. Specifically, the nets of the ship. More specifically, the things in the nets of the ship. He at least remembers to acknowledge the hand that feeds him and drops a treasure or two for Marshasp from time to time.

Arctic Fox

A creature that guards the Koi Pond on Tsotska d'la Mer. He only reveals himself when he senses the Seasonal Wind in the harbor. It also serves Iapetus, but prefers the nonchalant Quetzalcoatl over the business-like Tsotska.

Horseshoe Crab

An ominious entity that shadows the Seasonal Wind. What does it want? Why does it only follow this ship? Why is it so much bigger than a horseshoe crab should be? Even Lloredo is wary. May the Sunstar persevere in its duties as guardian.

Feisty Fish

A cute little creature that he kept in a small tank for a time. Lloredo chided him on how it was treated, so now it has a very generous aquarium. Its accomodations are now comparatively better than Marshasp's.

Relations

19675730_wFSZr3MwdnrjDb1.png
Prospero lover?

Prospero was Marshasp's first love--and possibly only love. He failed to protect Prospero when they left Teteocan, resulting in Prospero's near-death. Or death. He doesn't really know which. Once he's strong enough to ward off another Quetzal's venom and injuries, he will return. It would be easy if the story stopped there, but it doesn't. He encounters a doppelganger of Prospero--conveniently bearing the same name--and falls in love again. Only to be separated again. Needless to say, Marshasp's a little angry about everything now.

6129257?1586333961
Iapetus mentor

When Marshasp hatched his first dragon, the people around him insisted he go to Tsotska d'la Mer to learn more about dragons. Iapetus recognized him as a Quetzalcoatl and, seeing he had nowhere better to go, boarded him in his own hatchery for watching over. Marshasp learned the basics of dragon riding from him and Iapetus quickly realized he was harmless. They could almost be called friends now, though Iapetus would never admit to having such a thing.

lloredo-202.png
Lloredo captain

Lloredo was the one who captured the Seasonal Wind and freed Marshasp; As such, Marshasp feels indebted and quite glad to remain on the ship and work for the Rebellion. While Lloredo is aware of his species, the man has seen so many dangerous creatures and persons among the Naki that a quetzal doesn't even phase him. He's taught Marshasp about practical non-dragon-related things. His Jungle dragons are cute to look at and listen to, but very annoying to interact with, so Marshasp is careful not to be caught alone in a swarm of them.

kija.png
Kija smol

He doesn't get along with kids; That much is plain. Kija doesn't get along with anyone. These two only interact when forced to by Iapetus or Prospero. It's not that they hate each other--they just don't have a reason to become friends. Marshasp does respect her ability to play the lyre, and her dragons are peculiar to him on a philosophical level, but otherwise even their dragons don't interact.
