gruff but not cruel, quiet but not shy, aimless but not lost. israel is a man made bitter by the roads he's walked and by those he's loved and lost. only now, later in life, is he getting the opportunity to learn who he truly is underneath all the dust and grime. it's not a pretty picture, but it's him.

he could've lived his whole life like that and he probably would have, until he met his wife. odessa. pretty as a picture but tough as nails, it was love at first sight for him. for her? not so much. he courted her, swooning all the while, and finally wore her down enough to give him a chance. and from there, it's a story that's been told time and time again.
except for the part where dawson doesn't want them to leave.
except for the part where their argument descends into a kill-or-be-killed situation, and israel wins his happily ever after.
odessa gives birth a couple months after that, and everything changed. their daughter is tiny and beautiful and perfect, a blessing that israel hadn't earned any part of. but something between them had changed: it's different hearing about the bad parts of your spouse and seeing them first hand. when their daughter is nearing five months old, odessa leaves in the middle of the night.
israel, heartbroken and alone, travels far and wide before settling down in a valley. he meets and befriends others, including a little lioness by the name of tessa. their friendship is quickly formed and the two vow to stick together as partners in crime against the wild world. time comes and goes and eventually, their friendship blooms and deepens.
he loves tessa with all his heart, and the two are set to start a family together.
