Baraen is a fairly tall girl, especially with the platform shoes she wears. In a post apocalyptic world, where survivors struggle for food and luxury, her fancy Lolita dresses really make her stand out. It's clear even at first glance that Baraen is a rose in a desert of suffering. Her pink hair is actually natural and an aspect of her Parasitic Mutation. Baraen lost an eye back when she was just Hannah Maynor, but has covered the empty socket with a dressy eyepatch. She wears a floral crown made of black roses as a symbol of her "royalty" and power.

A parasitic plant wiped out the world's population. Among a small percentage were people like Hannah Maynor, who formed symbiotic relationships with their parasite and gained supernatural powers. Baraen is the name of Hannah as a Parasite Queen, a survivor, and a ruler of a small gang called the "Black Roses." Her mutated parasite could start a secon wave of the apocalyptic epidemic, so she is highly respected by those around her.

Baraen comes off as being cruel and merciless, but her mean, bullying treatment of others is just a masked attempt to make her followers stronger. But deep down, "Hannah" hates the strong facade that she portrays as Baraen. At the same time, she blames the "weaker" personality she lived with as Hannah for the state she is in and the suffering she causes. She is a girl torn by the way she lived before and the way she has to live now, and is gradually driving herself insane as she comes to hate all aspects of herself.

Hannah Maynor was born in Los Angeles, California, as the middle child in a family of five. She had a successful older sister and a pesky younger brother and lived with her two parents. Growing up, she was constantly self-pressured by the comparison to her sister. Anna was an actress and a model who had pursued her dream as young as sixteen. Hannah got into Lolita fashion as a way to compare herself to Anna, trying to use beautiful fashion as a means of covering up her "plain flaws." Her younger brother, in contrast, was just seven and an all around pain in the butt. Because Hannah's parents were both busy business people, she was often stuck with just her siblings.

Anna would look after the two of them and prioritized her family over her career. Hannah would steam silently with jealousy over how perfect her sister was, but she secretly did appreciate Anna's support. Anna's influence on Hannah's life continued into High School. Anna was three years older than Hannah and had graduated at the end of Hannah's freshman year. The school population therefore knew that Hannah was the sister of an attractive and popular model.

When Anna attended school there, she would pursue anyone who bullied Hannah and protect her little sister. But Hannah felt bad for troubling Anna, and ashamed that she couldn't handle her own problems, so stopped talking about the bullying after Anna left.

She ended up in a toxic friend circle where she was the errand girl, and was too ashamed to ask for help. Hannah did have two close friends in High School, but by the time that the story starts they are beginning to consider abandoning Hannah because she's always so busy running errands for bullies.

This sad and miserable life takes a sharp turn when Hannah is infected with a Parasite. The parasite forms a symbiotic relationship with Hannah and grants her superhuman powers. But Hannah doesn't realize how dangerous these powers are, until it's far too late.

  • Hannah adopts the name "Baraen" coming from the Japanese word "Bara" for "Rose" and tagging "EN" to make an "Ann" sound, in reference to her real name.
  • She changed her name because she didn't want her "real self" to be the murdering and bossy leader that she had to become to survive. She hopes that someday she can abandon the name "Baraen" and go back to being "Hannah."
  • This tug of war between her two identities causes Hannah a lot of stress, and is a key part of her character. Hannah dislikes the girl she has had to become in order to survive, but knows that the Baraen personality is necessary.
  • Only her closet friends know her real name. She doesn't think Hannah is "necessary" to survive and worries that her true personality is just a hinderance. When her decisions go wrong, she blames her "weaker and more naive, foolish self" for their happening.
  • This is very unhealthy. Don't try this at home, kids.

Parasite Hostess

/////

Being a "Parasite Queen" means that Hannah is the host to a parasite. It focuses its "core" around the pericardium, creating a vine-like structure around her heart that acts as a first line of defense if she is stabbed. If the core is destroyed then the parasite will die off very suddenly, and likely take Pari with it.

However, it must be destroyed in a single shot. If the parasite's core is only damaged or "feeling threatened" then it will go berserk. When her parasite core goes berserk it forces thin vines to extend from Hannah's body and attach to other people, draining their bodies of energy so that it can repair any damage. This means that Pari is typically very dangerous if she is injured in any sort of way, since the parasite cannot tell a fatal injury from a simple flesh wound.

Being a host also means that Hannah has to eat twice as much as a normal person and sleep a few hours longer in order to stay healthy. She is "eating and resting for two". The parasite takes the same percentage of her nourishment at all times, so Pari gets very tired and sick if she isn't eating or sleeping enough. On the plus side, she is able to spoil the parasite by eating exceptionally sugary foods, which makes it temporarily stronger.

Superhuman Abilities

////////

Mutated parasites like Hannah's give their hosts special abilities. Every mutation is a bit different. In Hannah's case, she can make roses grow from her blood. She will cut her finger and use the drops of blood to "plant seeds." Hannah's plant grows looking like roses.

Hannah's most terrifying ability is her ability to create "spores" in the air. They are so tiny that they are invisible, but they act quickly. Early in the story, Hannah will leave spores just by touching things, often through her sweat when she's stressed. Anyone who comes in contact with a spore will have part of her Parasite inside of them. Hannah can then (sometimes accidentally,) cause the Parasite to activate and consume her victims. Her Parasitic Roses are black, but when they have human blood to consume they will turn a brilliant red instead.

Finally, all parasites can create the "fight or flight" state. Hannah can selectively turn this on or off. When on, her physical strength, speed, and stamina seem to boost significantly. Too long like this leaves her very drained, but because she can control it freely she is able to use it to boost her strength in fist fights or for running away from specific threats. Too long in this state can make Pari feel paranoid.
