Ford is a shapeshifter. His origin story is much like the trope where as when he was a boy he scared the heck out of his parents by partially shifting into a lion. So they gave him away to a lab to be tested on, as shifters weren't a common thing in the area. Their blood was seen as highly valuable and said to have medicinal properties. He gets rescued though
