Personality:

Richard is an entertainer at heart and has a very loud personality. He is constantly joking -- to an extent where his friends doubt his ability to properly handle serious topics. He carries a lot of trauma due to being a victim of child abuse, but is a fake it til you make it kind of guy and tends to drink his trauma or implode, rather than explode. Richard would prefer to sustain himself solely on alcohol and cigarettes were that possible, so he has a lean, if not malnourished, build. He can be kind of vain, preferring not to be seen in "frumpy" clothes that may detract from his "physical excellence." Despite his lifestyle, Richard is athletic primarily as a skilled runner, but his poor choices are catching up to him and it tends to show in him looking older than he should. While some people find Richard abrasive, he is generally charismatic and can make fast friends with just about anyone. Despite being an advocate for disenfranchised people and cultures, and a protector of victims of domestic abuse, Richard isn't totally free from the influence of his father, and can be misogynistic and intensely fatphobic.

Backstory:

Richard was born to a mafia family in which his italian mafioso father bought a young Japanese woman for sex via yakuza human trafficking. Richard strongly identified with and idealized his mother and resented his father, who was violently abusive and cruel. Because of her situation, his mother couldn't precisely love him and his brothers, but she wanted them to grow up knowing tenderness and was intensely protective of them. After a domestic violence incident in which his father strangled his mother to death, Richard vowed to one day take down and kill his father -- but still a teenager living under his care, he had to live with his abuse (during that time he was subjected to beatings, emotional abuse, and at one point having his father kill his dog in front of him as punishment) for many years until he was able to be legally emancipated at 16. Once emancipated Richard cut ties completely with the mafia and started studying to be a cop, and eventually a detective. Richard struggles with a lot of hidden mental health issues, including c-ptsd, but tends to hide it under a performer persona. Despite his mother actually being somewhat cold to him and his brothers, and spending a lot of time dissociated, he idealizes her as being more warm and loving than she was because of how he lost her.
