Benedict (haha................................... egg) is a bot built by Dr. Robotnik. His designated purpose is ostensibly that of a glorified password journal; Ivo talks, and Benedict listens! Or, well, records for later use. While this is a not a motive Robotnik would ever admit to, Benedict suspects he was also created to fill... a personal void of sorts. After all, would anyone stick around long enough to grasp the fullness of the doctor's rants and ramblings, were it not their job? Perhaps he was lonesome. So Benedict tries to make the documentation experience a little more fun by contributing to the conversation from time to time, when he can do so without facing threat of reconditioning (pictured).
Unlike Robotnik's other "babies" (as far as the 2020 movieverse is concerned), Benedict was programmed with the ability to think and feel! Why would Robotnik do this? Well, because he can. You'd be hard-pressed to find any other so-called scientists capable of replicating an authentic human consciousness! Benedict is, above all else, a conquest in this regard. As an added bonus, minions are much more compliant when they're susceptible to emotional manipulation... hell, Robotnik would twist the bot's feelings even if productivity wasn't a variable. It's just so fun to see him squirm, to know a creation of his aches in a way that should not even be possible. And it's possible that there's some personal delight to be derived from it all; Robotnik can't recall the last time any creature--let alone one of steel and wires--regarded him with such unconditional lust. What could be more pathetic, more simple to exploit?
(On the subject of... such a sentiment, there's a certain mutual benefit. Robotnik often finds himself pent up from his tireless work, and who better to relieve that tension than a willing (desperate) underling who can feel every last sensation and recreate them with technical ease? This is also the place in the biography wherein I will state for the record that Benedict was pointedly designed with the capacity for all sexual organs. He has a built-in orifice to simulate the vagina, and that little heart design on his crotch is the mechanism to which a robotic dick can be attached and detached at will. Sorry everyone. Benedict fucks!)
In spite of Robotnik's boasts that this latest creation of his is disposable, more and more he begins to feel protective of the little thing. It makes sense that Benedict not be allowed to go out on dangerous missions (because he would be a pain to patch up, of course), but when little things like the way other agents look at his robot or the snide remarks made by that blasted hedgehog and his friends begin to pose an earnest threat, Ivo fears a change in the tide. Could he, perchance, have feelings for Benedict!?
In other iterations of the Sonic franchise, Benedict's design would be a lot more fun/funky/chaotic! Replicating the sleek minimalism of the movieverse was a CHORE, honestly. I demand robots with cacophonous aesthetics!!! (also Benedict's whole narrative would probably be a lot less sadistic in the toons/games ngl)
