Originally a genetic experiment into mass-production of spider silk, Layla wasn't expected to see the light of day until she'd fulfilled her purpose. (Un?)Fortunately, the project was shut down due to ethical reasons- seriously, who thinks keeping a sentient being locked in the same three rooms for its entire life is a good idea, even "for science?"- leaving Layla free to pursue her own dreams. However, being raised in an isolated environment, she didn't have many aspirations of her own- mostly, she tends to a small garden of carnivorous plants, making what little spending money she has binding books. Due to her innate ability to produce massively upscaled spider-like silk, the books themselves last through a surprising amount of wear and tear, and books she's bound are highly sought after. Her name isn't anywhere on them- they are, however, almost completely fire-resistant. Many a good book has been set on fire for collecting purposes.

When she's not gardening or binding books, she tends to get lost in her own thoughts. She'd love to find out what the world is like outside of her apartment, but she's had it ingrained in her since a young age that leaving would spell death for her. Most people just assume her apartment is abandoned, but that doesn't explain the sound of footsteps late at night, or the sound of music.
