Personality

“The Ravenous Hyena” Kenzo is the resident shipwright and a sniper on the Barto Club. She’s a childhood friend to the Super Rookie, Bartolomeo. 

In contrast to how much of an airhead her captain can be, Kenzo is meticulously careful, despite being just as vulgar, with a short fuse, reacting explosively at a pin drop towards others that rub her the wrong way. This is a consequence of the amount of stress she is under daily because of her astoundingly laid-back crewmates in contrast to the situations they’re put in and the amount of disaster that often comes their way because of it, especially around the ship. Despite it all, most of them are childhood friends or from the same village, Kenzo feels protective of them because of that, going above and beyond to make sure everyone is unharmed and resting by the end of the day. She’s not the best person when it comes to expressing her feelings verbally so Kenzo lets her actions speak for her- be it giving one an extra serving of food, helping them out with their chores (or whipping their asses into shape), to indulging in Barto’s obsession with the StrawHats; being fair though, she also contributes with her own Strawhat idolatry every once in a while.

She’s a curious, creative person and has a natural affinity for craftsmanship, be it about ships and their construction to the fabrication of various weapons whenever she manages to get her hands on good materials. Most of the weapons around the crew were either made or modified by Kenzo to fit each person’s needs. Curiously enough the patience she displays while working on her stuff doesn’t apply to others, as mentioned above, she can be quite testy and, at times, riled up enough to clock someone while at it.

As rough as she appears to be, Kenzo is easily flustered where matters of the heart are concerned - specifically regarding her crush on her disaster of a captain. Before setting out to sea, Kenzo believed it to be a fleeting crush, not dissimilar to puppy crushes you’d get as a teenager, but years later she still finds herself glancing over at Bartolomeo with the softest look when she thinks no one notices. However, any attempt to even talk about it is either interrupted or backfired, automatically sabotaged by Kenzo herself.

Likes: 

• Dogs, puppies, almost everything of the canine sort!
• The smell of freshly cut wood
• The Straw Hats; a big fan of Franky and Usopp
• Alcohol - her go-to when stressed out about her crew’s antics

Dislikes: 

• Hyper feminine fashion (lots of pinks, frilly dresses, etc)
• Nosy people drive her up the wall, stemming from an upbringing of busy-bodies in the village who were somehow unable to mind their own business to the point where it felt like an interrogation. Needless, to say, Kenzo has little patience for these types.
• Riddles and mind games frustrate her, so she’d rather do without them

Habits:

• She’s always the last one to fall asleep, keeping an eye out for any trouble that could come their way.
• When stressed out, Kenzo’s coping mechanism drivers her to shut herself in her room or workplace.

Phobia(s)/ Fear(s):

• Not much can scare this strong pirate, besides the looming death that awaits anyone, for the most part, she doesn’t care much if the damage is towards her. The real fear is when its inflicted on those who are dear to her. After Bartolomeo ate his devil fruit and almost drowned, Kenzo grew slightly paranoid with the fact one of th most important people in her life couldn’t be near seawater...and now they were day in and out surrounded by it! Thanks to such, she grows agitated whenever fellow friends who are devil fruit users test their luck, is too close to a call to take a dive into the water, and often acts out of character, as in being too affectionate in front of others when such things happened. The most common cause is, of course, when that happens with her captain for the Nth time in that week and Kenzo is found stalking Bartolomeo around the ship like a worried mother. The rest of the crew finds it funny yet scary since the look on her face is anything but friendly or motherly, but very much like a hunter watching its prey.

After Dressrosa, this fear got worse. Watching Bartolomeo almost die was too much of a traumatic experience and later on memory for Kenzo. While some of her behavior stayed the same, on more than one occasion the shipwright was found sleeping by Bartolomeo’s door. It creates some worry between the rest of the crew but the girl herself has warned the others not to tell anything about it to Bartolomeo, passing it as a coincidence, nothing worthy to worry the dimwit.

Goal(s): Keep Barto alive  Create the most unique weapon

Backstory

Kenzo lost both of her parents at a young age to a deadly disease, at the time almost always fatal to those who caught it. Luckily she never did, but that very luck ended up costing her both of her caretakers at the tender age of 8. At the time, as an orphan and barely old enough to understand things, Kenzo was left on her own for most of the time, save the time and help of the villagers that provided food any chance they got and some used clothes, especially when seasons changed and the girl had a growth spurt, on top of learning by trial and error things such as cooking and sewing, without counting the responsibility of keeping the house tidy. This unexpected independence made Kenzo mature faster than other kids would, however didn't mean she was any less curious. Which in the end, lands her in the hands of the leader of the group of rascals of the village, Bartolomeo. 

Was a funny situation actually with Kenzo believing they were mugging another kid when in fact, and after punching the lights out of that green-haired roaster, she realized they were trying to harm the kid in the middle? Confusing since the rumours she heard were far less kind or heart-warming, in a sense, they almost seemed like puppies searching for warmth than little devils. Kenzo had felt envy before, mostly from the families that lived close to her empty and cold house, but she felt even more at the view of such a close and loyal group, who had almost pounced on her to defend their leader.

She did enter a fistfight with Bartolomeo once the initial shock wore off, the kid was taller and, not so surprisingly, stronger than her yet Kenzo refused to give in since it was the most time she had weirdly spent with other kids her age after her family passed away. Eventually, they both tired each other out, with Barto quickly brushing the whole thing under the rug once he and the other bellies roared for food. Without much thought, he pulled Kenzo to go with them, much to her surprise. And that's how she eventually met Grandma, what was once a one-time thing quickly turned into a routine, thanks to the gentle old woman's persistence, and she slowly gain her place in their group.

Eventually, even her big and lonely house turned into the group headquarters where they gathered to plan their next mischief or just hang out, truth be told often ending with everyone sleeping in her living room. Kenzo did complain at first, even if she didn’t truly mean it since she had company and the company of friends nonetheless! Years passed by and as their mischievous shifted as they grow older, Kenzo realized she had a certain affinity to create weapons and do manual labour, mostly around the fisherman ships - was her way of making some money the honest way and keeping the rooftop under her head once she hit her teenager years. By that time her relationship with Barto and the group was already pretty strong, always attached at each other hips. And before long, also the first time she came to be aware of her puppy crush on their leader during a dare, kindly given by Gambia who dared them to spend the night in an old and small cabin deep into the woods. After many years, was almost rare to be alone with just Barto’s dorky and rough around the edges self…yet… the caring touches and words made her heart jump more wildly than usual.

Life did go on despite that, Kenzo strongly believing it would fade away with time if she didn’t act on it, instead they grew stronger. At the time, and as far as she could remember, Kenzo had never given much thought on being a pirate or going out to the sea, do not mistake though…she was curious but not willing to leave behind what she considered her family. That is until that fateful day when Barto and she witnessed Monkey D.Luffy in Longtown. As much as she sometimes found it ridiculous how much of a fanboy Barto became about the pirate group, and dragged the others along on that matter, she was not that surprised since they were birds of the same feather- and she did find Usopp and Franky a big inspiration and the ones that fuelled her hidden dream.

She sailed along Barto and the others, firstly out of worry about the careless idiots and to reassure Grandma they would come back one day in one piece, but later on, drunkenly admitted to Gambia she wanted to see more of the world, be good enough to create the best weapon out there, to make sure she had a legacy of her own making once she was no longer in this world.

• Granny:
  Just like the rest of the crew, Granny is very dear to Kenzo, a motherly figure of some sort since she ends up being raised by her most of her childhood. At first, again like the rest, Granny’s advice was sought, heard, and put into motion...before Kenzo realized the elderly lady knew nothing about the sea and its dangers. There were some other things, th shipwright managed to intervene before it turned into a disaster, while others, such as navigating at first, were out of her reach. So every time that type of advice was given, Kenzo could only hope for the best (and tied herself to a secured spot just for safety measures).

  Honestly speaking, Gambia is the second person closest to Kenzo on the ship. They do clash more often than not given his laid-back personality, with Kenzo mostly trying to give them some real responsibilities among the ship, with no success but at the end of the day, they trust and respect each other. That being said, when the news of Gambia being injured reaches her ears, the shipwright almost blew another fuse, scrambling to get some proper medical attention, not before shouting if that idiot died she would drag him out of Hell just to kill him again for being so reckless.

  Kenzo cares deeply for the rest of the crew as well, having been friends with most of them since they were kids.. From making sure everyone is fed and in one piece in bed by the end of each day, she often takes the role of caretaker among them. She yells and often curses at them on the daily, but she would take a bullet for any in a blink of an eye.
