The owner of the mysterious Myrefall Library; home to some, sanctuary to many. Most of all, a building with a secret... (Backstory is accurate facts-wise, but the prose is old. I'm sorry ;n; I'll rewrite it soon. I don't know what else to put here RIP)

Veronica has been politely described as 'proper' and 'well-mannered' and not-so-politely described as 'anal' and 'a killjoy'. Both are true, she admits, and she proudly runs a very tight ship. Her extreme intellect should make tutoring and research her priority, but most of the mundane tasks in Myrefall are completed by her as well. Her persnickety nature leaves her exhausted and her assistants irritated. Learning to trust other people with things important to her is a work in progress.

That aside, one can't claim her efforts are in vain. The library she established with its multidimensional abilities has become a beacon to the misfits of the multiverse. A respected place of saftey and comfort. She cares deeply for her patrons and mothers them constantly to the point of overprotectiveness. Doublely so in the case of Viola, her adoptive sister and the library ghost.

Veronica does have a sense of humor. No, really! Who cares what Tomino claims? She just doesn't think pranks are funny... or puns. Or knock knock jokes. Or situational humor. Okay, maybe she doesn't have a sense of humor outside of dark sarcasm, but who can blame her? Tomino would grind anyone's gears. You could set your watch by their arguements.

Sigil Mastery

Strength:

Magical writing with a pre-determined function; alarm wards, devil circles, traps, and more. With enough prep-time any space can become a mine field and if there's one thing Veronica has, it's time.

Energy Manipulation

Strength:

Magic mixed with blood to take tangible form. This ability can be used offensively or defensively, but is dependant on Veronica's physical strength and stamina.

Levitation

Strength:

Magic gathered inside the body to physically lift oneself. This ability is also dependant on physical strength; ergo, Veronica must be able to lift her own body weight to levitate.

Healing

Strength:

Veronica will never grow old or sick, but injuries are still a reality. The most difficult discipline she's tried to learn yet, Veronica still has to gain the focus to be a truly effective healer.

History

Veronica had a happy childhood for the most part. She lived with her parents in a modest wood cabin, located in a backwater settlement somewhere in the new land of America. Her mother was loving and attentive, her father strong but gentle, and they always had enough to eat. The village was idyllic, peaceful.... Isolated. Without roads or railway tracks in its infancy.

Veronica was a respectable girl; pretty and well-behaved. She tried to be exactly what her parents raised her to be. She was kind, charitable, and intelligent. She loved looking after the village children. Her momma said she'd always had a parental streak. It was odd she never showed interest in having children of her own, but people didn't start to wonder until she got older.

She was careful to hide her romantic interest in girls to avoid making trouble for herself. Honestly, It was surprising no one suspected earlier. She became a spinster at 19 with no husband despite her mother's attempts at match-making.

One day, a boy from town tried to court her. He talked to her father and received his blessing, but she refused him. She didn't care for him in the slightest. He was a brute even if she had liked boys. Being courted wasn't unusual for Veronica, but his reaction was. He was furious she rejected him and started spreading rumours. By morning, everyone had heard that Veronica was a she-devil that seduced women. A whore. A lover to the demon Lilith.

This terrified Veronica. Had she slipped up somewhere? Was this just anger, or did he know? She ran to her parents and confessed. She begged for help stopping the rumors. They’re her parents. They had to protect her.

But they didn't. Veronica was turned over to the courthouse before dusk.

They charged her with lesbianism at first, but soon the accusations piled up. The rumours snowballed. It seemed her friends and neighbours didn’t like her that much after all. Was it jealousy? Boredom? Hysteria? Lesbianism, heresy, witchcraft. More and more as people she trusted lied about her. She wept and clutched her cross.

They kept her in a cell for days until she confessed. No food, little water, and a lot of abuse. She broke down; anyone would have broken down. Even with her confession, they didn’t lighten her sentence. The trial had spun out of control even if someone had wanted to stop it. They were going to have her executed.

Luckily, the priest of the town was a good man. God-fearing, yes, but educated. Empathetic. He convinced the people of the town to wall her in a spare room in the church basement instead of hanging her. They agree to seal her up behind a wall and let her starve, a slow death, a painful death... to allow her time to repent. If she prayed enough before she died, she could save her immortal soul. May God have mercy. Amen.

They sealed up the section of the basement, but the witch wasn't inside. The priest had hidden her away and put one of his wife's dress manniquins in her place. She was heartbroken but alive. He brought her food, water, and books while they waited for the situation to blow over. Unfortunately, before he'd gotten a chance to hid Veronica, the townspeople had gotten their hands on her. They chained her to the church with a sigil tattoo; 'holy' magic sanctioned by God to bind the 'evil witch'. Hypocrites.

She'd never be able to go outside again. She found this out when they tried to sneak her out the back and it felt like she was walking with burning knives in her feet. She wept and tossed aside her cross.

Years pass. Through the many books she’s brought, Veronica becomes a scholar and jack of all trades. What else is there to do? Religion, laws, art, history, languages. She learns it all. Through some of the more archaic books she’s brought, she finds magic. The very thing that her family, her friends, accused her of. She masters it out of spite.

When she was 21, she stops aging in herself through a magical accident. Irony from an uncaring God. Her punishment will be eternal; she mourns but does not weep.

More and more years pass. The priest’s family keep her hidden throughout generations. There are roads and railways built that connect the town with the rest of the country. It becomes a small city, and then a larger one. The ‘old town’ becomes the slums. No one remembers the witch locked up to die.

The bloodline of the kind priest runs out. The last heir of the family left the church to Veronica in his will, claiming she was his neice. She can finally leave the basement. She decides to convert the church to a library, a safe place for people prosecuted like her. Humans, magical creatures, Gods, and monsters. Her library is haven to many. Her prison becomes her home and maybe... Maybe she can be happy there.

Connections

Viola Misra

unknown.png

Beloved Sister

The first true family Veronica has had in centuries. She'd felt a need to protect this girl ever since she first came in for reading time and after her demise... Veronica may not need to protect Viola anymore but that's not going to stop her from trying.

Sam Pendleton

Friend/Employee

Sam has been a huge help around the library, even as a part-timer. Veronica appreciates her quiet, hardworking nature and how kind and patient she is with Viola. She's always welcome in Veronica's apartments for tea!

Tomino

Annoyance

A constant thorn in Veronica's side that she only lets stay because Viola likes him. She has to admit though, watching the aftermath of her 'shortness' curse is amusing. What? Thankful for the dimension-hopping? Maybe she is that too, a little...
