Profile

Esther birthplace is unknown. When she was a small child, she was found abandoned in a forest outside of a village in the Adrestian Empire. She was taken in by the village head and his wife, who raised her as their own child. However, it was quickly discovered that she was not a normal child. She possessed very sharp canine teeth akin to fangs, piercing white eyes, and an unnaturally large appetite for her size. She rarely spoke, and she could often be found staring and studying things intently, which frightened the other villagers. The villagers believed her to be the incarnation of a dragon (or even sometimes a demon), so they feared and avoided her. She was shunned and isolated, even by other children her age. The villagers believed that Esther was sent by the goddess to punish them. Even her adoptive parents feared her. They constantly received complaints about her, saying that something had to be done about the "dragon spawn."

Growing up, there was only one person who wasn't afraid of her and treated her with compassion: a boy her age named Alf. He would talk to her and play with her despite the warnings of everyone in the village, and he always said he saw the good in her and didn't believe any of the rumors about her. They would often go into the forest to escape the judging eyes of the other villagers. One day when they were 15, they encountered a monster in the forest. The monster killed Alf, but Esther managed to get away and run back to the village for help. When Alf's body was found, the villagers believed that Esther was the one that killed him. They rose up and demanded that she be exiled from the village. Her father conceded, and Esther was forced to leave. She wandered around the Empire for a year before hearing about Abyss. She decided to go into hiding there.

Personality

Because of her rough upbringing, Esther has adopted a shy and insecure personality. She tries to avoid people she doesn't know, as she finds it difficult to trust people, and she believes people will be afraid of her. Most of the fear for her stems from her sharp canine teeth, so she avoids smiling and tries to keep her mouth covered. She has a hard time talking to people she doesn't know, often relying on her friends to speak for her. However, she opens up more around her friends and can even be quite talkative around them. She cares deeply for her friends, and she likes to do whatever she can to make them happy, whether that be making them little trinkets or cooking for them. She is a very curious person, and she loves learning new things. She often does things just for the sake of learning, despite whether it is dangerous or not. Because of her curiosity and all the time she spent alone as a child, she learned how to build and craft things as well as cook, and she is quite skilled at both of them. She is also very smart and has basic knowledge of a lot of different subjects. Over time, she becomes more outgoing and confident in herself, and she begins to allow herself to smile.

She likes sharing meals, music, dragons and wyverns, and building things. She dislikes her sharp teeth, strangers, early mornings, and superstitions.

Etymology

The name Esther can be derived from the Old Persian stāra (meaning "star") although some scholars identify Esther with the name of the Babylonian goddess of love, Ishtar. Völund is another form of Völundr, a figure in Norse mythology who was an unequaled smith and craftsman.
