About

tumblr_pl6enxEFLA1qfd61lo2_r1_640.png

Mae was born to 'Sleeper' parents who had her life and ambitions planned out for her before she was even conceived. As the years passed, those hopes and dreams slowly dissolved as Mae began to present troublesome behaviors. From the time she was able to talk and walk, Mae appeared to speak to and befriend things that did not exist. At first, her parents opted to ignore these behaviors, asserting that it's typical for children to have such vivid imaginations. This worked well enough until Mae began insisting that her imaginings were real and she threw fits of frusteration when her parents would argue the contrary. It was with equal frusteration that her parents began punishing her for even mentioning the impossible aparations she claimed to see. By this point, she was only eight. Neither her mother nor her father wanted to consider the possibility that Mae was suffering some manner of psychological impairment, and were far more willing to force their daughter's silence on the matter with both verbal and physical reprimands. Even family friends were encouraged to ignore or chastise Mae's "nonsense". As a result, Mae developed into a very angry and confused child. At the young age of eleven, her frusteration and anger culminated into something her parents could finally see, something they could feel. Under the threat of her father's raised hand, Mae yelled her hatred at him. The walls around her burst into flame and the home burned to the ground.

The events that followed are little more than a half-remembered blur to her, now. Her family surrendered her to a foster care system located in the Inner City of Nevers. She remained there for a year, monitored closely by psychologists and caretakers who explained Lucidity to her and worked to establish a healthy relationship with her own Lucidityas well the anomalous pyrokinetic abilities attached to it. Prior to her thirteenth birthday, they placed her in the foster care of a sub-Patriarch named Thomas Bellamy, the only other Lucid on record who had personal, lived experiece dealing with anomalous Lucidity.

Ongoing Story

Mae loves her new home within Never's Inner City. She even loves Tom as her always concerned, but non-confrontational foster father. He lets her get away with far more than he should, and she has no qualms taking advantage of the man. However, she'll pick a fight with anyone who speaks poorly of him. She finds solace in the fact that he'd probably do the same for her.

During her three years living in Nevers, Mae has developed a troubling prejudice against Sleepers, and to a lesser extent, Dreamers. She'll terrorize them given the chance, over little more than the fact that they're not Lucid. Her beloved 'partner in crime', Bao, has been working diligently to navigate Mae away from her penchant towards toxic enmities, but to no apparent lasting avail. Only Mae can grapple with her own animosity, at what ever expense that may come to.

Personality

‘Passionate’ is one way to describe Mae's high energy levels and extreme emotions. Perhaps it’s her young age, but she tends to see things only in terms of black and white. The concept of a ‘middle ground’ or ‘blurred lines’ evades her on a daily basis.
Mae appears to see and consider the world and people around her only as they relate to her. Her grasp on empathy is weak, and she can appear rather inconsiderate. She’s also very decisive, and quick to take action. This tends to work both for and against her.

Sleepers, Dreamers, and Lucids (oh my!)

In this world, there are three kinds of people. Sleepers are those who preceive the world as it is intended to be seen. They see nothing peculiar, nothing "out of the ordinary". Dreamers, on the other hand, see a great deal more. They are often dismissed as having an "overactive imagination" at best, or as "crazy" and "paranoid" at worst. They see things for which there is no "real world" explaination...and often try to find an explaination themselves. "Ghosts", "aliens", "demons" and some wide assortment of conspiracy theories are often the work of a dreamer trying to make sense of the largely unpreceived world around them. What they don't know is that these inexplicable, almost tangible distortions of reality are the work of Lucids.

Lucids make up a small fraction of the human population. They are innately capable of producing convincing illustions, distorting the world around them to their liking. For the most part, these illusions, while convincing, have no effect on the physical world. There are...exceptions...rare exceptions. The extent of physical manefestations seems to be very limited and to a Sleeper observer, may appear as small telekentic feats. You know the sort; bending a spoon, lighting a candle, filling the air with hair-raising static... little more than that. To a Dreamer (as well as to fellow Lucids), the illusions produced by a Lucid can appear so convincingly real that, even though it cannot cause physical harm, it can still pose as a significant psychological and emotional threat. And so, in cities like Nevers where Lucids tend to congregate, a secret governing system is established between them. Exceptionally potent Lucids are assigned roles as Matriarchs and Patriarchs of allocated districts and are granted administrative powers over a localized infastructure designed to police the activities of the Lucids living under their jurisdiction.

All Lucids manifest a perminant, illusionary extention of themselves. These are called Avatars, and will often take on a form that is psychologically significant to its respective Lucid. When a Lucid becomes a Matriarch or Patriarch, it is expected that they "extend" their Avatar to blanket their district. The result being that every district under the watch of a Matriarch or Patriarch will have an appearance unique to the style of its specific overseer.

Mae's Avatar

Beelze takes on the day-to-day appearance of a pillow sized bumble bee. Soft, fluffy, and squishy, it's hard to believe this fanciful apoid is Mae's vector for devistating blazes. The black and yellow warning stripes are no bluff, however. Beelze's anomalous properties manifest when Mae experiences fear or panic. At which point, Beelze takes on a far more obscure and menacing shape worthy of his full designation "Beelzebub". By the time his wild and piercing gaze bears down upon you, it is already too late. The flames are licking at your skin and your lungs fill with smoke.
