Charlemagne

Charlemagne is an orator, former warlord and Valhoren government official, often regarded as one of the most important (or perhaps infamous) figures responsible for pushing the Valhoren war to victory by extravagant measures of propaganda. While Charlemagne still does his due diligence in Valhoren's Department of Publicity (read: propaganda), Washington whispers that he's also dabbling in his twin brother's business, in Valhoren's highly-rumored Department of Biological Weapons.

About

A carefully calculated man, driven by ego, power and logic; precisely the opposite of crass. Those who fell victim to his hands underestimated how dangerous he is; Charlemagne is capable of acting coy and warm, needy and helpful—nestling into one's deepest vulnerabilities, before uncovering this suave act to ultimately turn it against you. Charlemagne's prowess lay in the fact that he is able to morph himself into what one would like to see—or yearn—and once this happens, you've fallen right into his trap. The perfect description for the Minister of Publicity, don't you think?

Despite being born into aristocracy, Charlemagne had amassed his titles and power alone, infamous for ruthlessly defeating his own father and casting away whoever he deems useless. He rose through the ranks at record speed, becoming a cult-like figure, though surprisingly does not usurp the power of his higher-ups despite having the means to do so (it's theorised that Charlemagne respected them enough, and shared a common goal). The height of his fame peaked at the ultimatum of the Valhoren War, pushing it into ruthless height to destroy a world he so deems useless. The new Valhoren has decorated his name ever since; but Charlemagne hasn't stopped there.

Personality

He has a weighty title to his name yet, and greatly feared—perhaps ironically—by his charm; if you were not intensely horrified, you were filled with energetic rigor. His presence, if you were not used to it, resembles painful white noise, sometimes too intense to bear. Charlemagne's chin is always held up in pride, and his words have a dangerous force to them that other elites are inclined to only communicate to him by letters out of anxiety. One would always be careful to displease him; in his idle state, his voice is soft and kind—though when provoked, this  voice goes softer and softer like a lullaby, and to those unfamiliar with this characteristic is not too far from certain unpleasantry. It does not help that Charlemagne's displeasement does not slip into his face; his expressions are always unreadable, only shown to those who he deems worthy of receiving such reactions. His words may be pleasant, but his words are carefully chosen to have a lasting effect on those who interact with him. You could never tell whether he was being genuine or passive aggressive; and though his words may be vague, Charlemagne never lies—ironic for such a deceptive man.

Charlemagne is then perfectly capable of getting things to work his way; regardless, he has no crack in his heart for human relation. For all his seriousness, the only indulgence he partakes in is contributing towards a brand new world order—whatever it is, and whatever it takes. Charlemagne is hard to reason by pathos—and although he sees right through attempts at logical reasoning, he'll  lend you a helping hand... perhaps humoured by your attempt to undermine him, but that is the only way to receive his kindness: in your mockery.

Appearance

Charlemagne's appearance does not cease to be daunting, even after first glance, and it contributes to his aura. Charlemagne stands at 6'2", with broad shoulders adorned by a white cape. Beneath it is a black reflective longcoat, streamlined against his body. His hair is short around the crown, save for a long strand dyed white-blonde, and elongated at the back. He is just as strong as he appears to be.

The Valhoren War

Hollowday—the first day of the attack against the Collection of Allied Nations (CAN)—marks the first day of the Valhoren War, beginning sometime around year 2265, lasting nine years. CAN was a committee of the world's powers to discuss the welfare of smaller countries; in essence, the committee existed to ensure that political altercation was avoided. As one might expect, this committee would soon dissolve after it's main facility was destroyed, and blame befell on CAN's most powerful member, the US.

Shaken by the terrorist attack, but unable to discern whether the US or some other nation was to blame, the world watched as the global superpower dismantles itself into smaller four nations, unable to agree with each other—Horen, Washington, Valent and Mercia was born out of the ashes of that destroyed facility, comprised of what had made the country beforehand. The country's military had split to form Horen and Valent, comprised of the entireity of the military, utterly believing that the country must be protected at all costs from such attack ever again, leaving a half-scrambling Washington, a nation of government and government-backing citizens that were unable to quite garner the support of the military. Mercia was otherwise comprised of pacifist citizens who wanted nothing to do with the war, though was utterly decimated for being in the grey area. What remained were Valent and Horen, going head-to-head with Washington, and it would have been the end of the civil war, if it were not for the concept of allies. Thus, the Valhoren War began, determined to defeat the other no matter the cost and forgetting what had caused it in the first place.

Backed by respective global forces, the escape from the Valhoren War was only viable by being born into wealth or patronage, resulting in an economic vacuum. The number of nations dwindled from 310 to only 30, either from merging alliances, complete decimation by war, or lack of government to control the people. The now-jointed Valhoren nation has burned Washington to the ground, along with anyone who dared to oppose it. Anyone who remained now scrambled to form some sort of internationally dependent program, but alas—there was a new global order rising now, and Valhoren has defeated its enemies to the core.

It's widely rumoured that the terrorist attack at CAN fifteen years ago was a part of the plan, and not the cause—but who would ever know?

History

Son to a ruthless and decorated Valent warlord—the very man who pushed the borders of the war itself—Charlemagne and his twin brother Nero was safe from its devastations, having being born into wealth. Charlemagne enjoyed quiet upbringing in the countryside estates, where aristocrats pay for protection of their lives and property. Charlemagne was taught to be aware of the war and was constantly reminded of its consequences, but nevertheless relished a joyful childhood, remarked to be incredibly close to his brother. Despite disliking his father's strict routine in education, Charlemagne idolized him greatly, throwing away the choice of a carefree life to follow his father's footsteps as a cult figure in war. He followed his father's strict discipline, mimicking his patterns of speech and routine, eventually growing up to be a Valent government official himself—in fact Charlemagne became so absorbed in his pursuit of power that he defeated his father in provincial elections of the aristocratic government, resulting in tensions between his father, and then his father's eventual death due to devastation from loss of power; once this happened, Charlemagne separated himself from the family name and freely pursued what he assumed was rightly his. Despite so, he continually idolized his father to his day and may sometime speak fondly of his mother and the rest of his family—though always in distaste, as if they were lost potential to the new world order he is establishing.

Charlemagne is Nero's fraternal twin, older by two minutes—despite so, he continually refers to Nero as "little brother" to establish that they were different in status. Charlemagne had adored him to the ends of the world—and it went without saying that Nero did conversely, too—that is, until Charlemagne drifted further and further away from him. When asked (only ask if Charlemagne's in a good mood), he would justify that relationships change all the time, and that connections are made or broken depending on what you wanted to pursue in life—clearly not prosocial, but it seems as if Charlemagne only thinks of Nero as a chesspiece once he realized his dream of unifying the country. The more power he gained, the less fond he became of Nero; he thought of the latter as puny and, although they eventually shared the same goal, Charlemagne defines Nero as being without a rigid backbone—too chaotic, too amateur. It's not as if Charlemagne wanted glory of this new regime all alone—in fact Charlemagne takes kindly to those who are passionate of being his underdogs—but he simply thinks Nero isn't good enough. One would think, despite Charlemagne's constant bitter comments towards his brother, that Nero would eventually break away from him—this is not the case. It just so happened that Nero had been wound tightly around Charlemagne's little finger; all Charlemagne had to do was smile like Charlie did, and any resolve Nero has to escape his grasp is lost down the drain.

Trivia

  • His hair is originally white. He'd dyed it black when he began to join political clubs in his post-secondary education, presumably to begin dissociating himself from his family.

Meta/Design

  • Has bright, very intense eyes.
