Akauri Okawa

Akauri isn't afraid of people, nor does he hold any grudges against them, he just tends to prefer his own company over the company of others. He's always been an outcast and a wallflower, but never a pariah. He minds his own business while the world moves around him. He prefers it this way and doesn't like when people pity him for his social alienation.

He is reserved, independent, and contemplative, but doesn't like to think about topics too abstract or enormous to comprehend, like death or the universe or where he came from or where he's going. He'd rather just think about what he's making for dinner (today it's dino nuggies and green beans) and sit under his favorite maple tree watching the leaves and little helicopter seed pods drift down.

Akauri’s mother worked as a Tagalog tutor for adults in the Philippines, where she was born. There, she met her husband, Akauri's father, who was an American immigrant from Zimbabwe on a trip. They decided to move there and have Akauri and his younger sister. They moved back to the states when Akauri was nine. They live together in the apartment next to the one inhabited by the main cast of Rainbow City. Akauri’s father is a stay at home parent to him and his sister. Akauri’s mother loves him and his sister enormously but works a lot of late nights to support them, so they don’t get to spend a lot of time with her.
