Mort Gilligan

Mort Gilligan was instructed in the arcane arts from a very young age, by his parents, both of which work together to run the family's school of necromancy. With this headstart on most who'd call themselves wizards, he was ready to set out for the world at merely 18 years of age, to practice his craft, and seek hidden knowledge.

Traveling from his home continent of Maramar to Dalemvuren, he ended up outside a mysterious tower a little while outside the town of Timan. As he sketched the tower and its surroundings, a party of adventurers emerged from a hidden entrance. He made quick friends with these folks, and they set out together toward the ruins of the ancient city of Qunrith. They continue together for a good while before being sent on an assignment to investigate strange tremors in Hazenpool. On the descent down this dungeon ruin, they encounter a group of mindflayers. The party attempts a retreat but Mort is caught by a mindflayer, and his brain is eaten from his skull, spelling his end.

After a relatively brief two months, all spent under constant barrage by waves of darkness and suffering, waves that permeate the afterlife, Mort's soul is saved from a slow sundering. A great old one pulled him out and placed him in the Somnium, a dream realm where lost souls end up, so long as they are within the small area of the world that it covers. Charged with protecting the dream, he is given a new chance at life as an aberration, a creature of strange, alien, and malleable physiology.
