Carlie spent much of her life doubting others and unable to trust people. Or, to be more clear, she trusted them to have ulterior motives that were more important than her safety and general well-being. She was mostly right, but she's since learned that some things are more important than safety. She still makes all her friends' armor, just to be sure.
Origin
Carlie started as a runner for the Carta in Starkhaven and moved onto more complicated work defending smuggled lyrium and sniping rivals. She was observing the conclave to make some deals with whoever came out on top, but everyone decided to ruin her life for no reason.
DAI
The first thought that ran through her mind after the conclave was that the Carta was going to have her head for this, intention regardless. That overwhelming fear kept her on the lookout for spies and assassins until the Inquisition grew to the point where they couldn't touch her. Even then, she was acutely aware that people were using her for their own motives and they cared more about their goals then what she wanted.
Then she met Cole. He changed everything. For the first time, someone's ulterior motive was simply to help people. She latched onto him like a limpet and did things she thought he'd approve of. Now she's working on acting compassionately.
Trespasser
Reminded by Cole that her enemy "wasn't trying to hurt people", Carlie folded the Inquisition into Divine Victoria's honor guard and set about trying to save the world. Again. Carlie was now convinced that she could have a positive impact on Thedas and strove to justify her growing influence under that ideal.
Carlie hangs onto his every action. She doesn't know if it's his spirithood that makes him so intrinsically good or just him as a person, but nothing matters as long as he stays by her side.
Bull was upfront with his motives and Carlie appreciates that. She thinks she can probably make sure they never conflict with hers.
Carlie was just as wary of him as all the others until she learned his story. They're very similar, deep down, just trying to emulate someone great. She dragged him out to drinks afterward and gave him fancy armor so now they're friends.
He's so nice, even if Carlie isn't sure why. It's nice to have another dwarf around to snark with. He takes care of her and he takes care of Cole.
Carlie's not sure what she wants from Scout Harding, but at the very least they're friends. They complain about the advisors together.
Carlie doesn't trust mages on principle, but Dorian's alright. He comes in handy and his motives are obvious. They are something akin to friends.
