Profile

Opal was the first of the seraphim to remove her physical form and by doing so allowed the lower world to evolve faster with a population boom. She was a very perky, happy seraph and found the upper world too oppressive and strict to want to remain there for a few more million years.

She was quite difficult not to get along with and found great pleasure in ensuring that the other seraphim were getting along (as best they could). In her opinion, she felt able to read anyone like an open book, but this lead to slight upset when things weren't going according to the plan she'd produced in her head. When arguments suddenly arose amongst her friends, it would cause her to interrupt their argument with her own tears - inevitably leading them to stop arguing to attempt to comfort her. For many millennia the other seraphim would adapt to this and argue after ensuring she wasn't anywhere close by.

Aside from this, Opal was considered very level-headed and usually the first to assemble a basic plan if need be. She was the one to convince Franz to expand the upper and lower world - giving proof of concept by creating the first Ophanim, which would be utilised to provide a stable connection between both worlds. Previously, sending essence based forms (including essence itself) to the lower world would prevent them from traveling back to the upper world. As the seraphim were the primary holders of essence at this point, a visit to the lower world could lead to the destruction of the upper. Production of the Ophanim surprised even Franz, who didn't believe such a feat could be possible, as he'd literally designed the Lower world to be observation-based only. Her ingenuity was rewarded, and her 'descendants' all became successful within the Empyrean realm. Her current most notable descendant is Niya.

The main reason for her wanting to move on was the lack of freedom she felt within the upper world. She had very little to do aside from entertaining herself and fulfill the demands of Franz. Any signs of wanting to leave were met with cruel punishment (especially in the case of Bailey) and whilst she did not state her resentment she jumped at the chance to leave, masking her reasoning as simply 'wanting to entertain'. Essentially becoming the essence that resides within the fountain, she feels much happier knowing she's been able to bring a lot of happiness into the lives of others. After the successful completion of the fountain's trial, she warns Alia that the Empyrean realm was designed for Franz and that the lower world is one she may be happier in (but Alia brushes her off as being on too high a horse).

Essence & Fountain

The vitality essence allows life to exist in the first place. Lacking things necessary for survival, such as sufficient food or water, will cause this essence to decay. Too much of this essence can cause bouts of hysteria and psychotic/manic episodes. When humans (or other organisms) decide to have children, it is necessary to extract vitality essence from them to provide to their offspring such that the total vitality essence does not exceed its upper limits. More of this essence can be produced during happy periods of a person's life (through reactions of other essence stands) and can be extracted by the fountain protector for storage within the fountain.

The job of the vitality fountain's protector is to ensure the decay rate is not too fast, as allowing this to happen would cause life to slowly cease to exist. This fountain resides in a field and is modest in comparison to some of the later ones created, having no protective architecture in place. The surrounding area is filled with flora and many injured fauna find comfort with close proximity to the fountain - despite it not having any healing properties. Humans are prevented from interacting with this fountain, due to the power that Opal held whilst in her physical form - many of the residents in the village closest to this fountain say they can feel an aura emanating when they get too close. In ancient times, the founders of this village believed the fountain had mystical properties, allowing them to grow crops more bountiful than they had ever seen among other things. Thus the annual tradition of paying respects through a night of celebration was begun. Amongst the protective cherubim, Stilts (the current protector) likely has the easiest job as the fountain requires little in the way of maintenance or actual protection.

Fulfilling this fountain's trial requires manipulating the vitality essence within the current protector to ensure that they do not pass away (at the start of the trial this strand of essence begins to exponentially decay). The difficulty currently comes from the fact that Stilts was originally a human and thus essence manipulation becomes much trickier for those partaking in the trial. Due to the length of time this trial can go on for, the partaker is also likely to undergo a psychotic episode. Failing this trial requires the replacement of the protective cherub and the participating cherub is likely to be stripped of their powers and recycled.
