Best described as a trickster or semi-malicious troublemaker, it's more the joy he finds in destroying demons that motivates Beelzebub to do his job than anything else. He frequently toys with his enemies before dispatching them, and makes use of strategies meant to disorient while he evades incoming attacks and sets himself up to deliver the final blow. His sharp wits and speed serve as his main weapons, and he relishes coming up with mental games to ensnare and eradicate foes. Because he can see through all the red eyes across his outfit, in addition to the six on his face, it's nearly impossible to approach him undetected.

He's well-mannered and thinks highly of his accomplishments, and often flatters town officials to win their favor. It's always safe to assume he's got some sort of scheme up his sleeve, though he presents himself as a gentleman with charming smiles and polite gestures. But that normally suave demeanor can turn ugly in an instant; he can become vengeful if slighted, and will seek to demolish anyone who even dares to try to harm his teammates. At present, he serves as the primary mentor of the Stargazers, helping the various younger members to hone their demon hunting skills and mastering their powers. Though Centurion remains the official leader, all on the team turn to Beelzebub for advice and support, and respect his experience and level of expertise dealing with corrupted gods.

He comes from a secret underground city hive of bug types, which was feared in the larger world due to the lack of clarity around its actual location, and the way it served as a hub for all kinds of syndicate activity. Tired of living in the dark as a hitman, Beelzebub took it upon himself to kill the bosses of the various mobs and fled the complex during the ensuing chaos. He supposes its only a matter of time before his past catches up with him, but is determined to live life to its fullest until that moment comes.

Besides his charisma and intelligence, Beelzebub uses his cane and ancient magic in battle. He seems to have some strange connection to the old powers, which neither he nor anyone else in his company completely understands. Like Hildebrand, he is one of the few capable of going head-to-head with a demon god on his own.

Design Notes

  • He has a total of 36 eyes: 6 on his face (one main pair, and two pairs beneath on his cheeks), 13 across his torso (5 on each lapel of his coat, 3 on his vest), 4 on his wrists (2 on the outer side of each), 10 on his thighs (5 on the outer side of each), and 3 in his hair (as bead fasteners).
  • His sclera (the "whites" of the eyes) of his primary eyes are black, and his irises are red. He has two additional eyes (completely red, with black pupils) below each main set, for a total of six on his face.
  • He has sharp teeth, and a set of large fangs on the upper jaw where the canines are. They can be included or excluded if his mouth is closed, but should be taken into account if his mouth is open.
  • His four main wings on his back are semi-transparent, and silver with red tips. The wings on his shoulder are solid silver; some have red tips and some do not (the placement of the wings themselves or the color of the tips does not need to be replicated exactly, though he should always have four large, "primary" wings that extend further out than the rest).
  • His hair is black with red streaks on some strands near his face. The section on the left side of his face (right, if looking at his face), is separated into two main parts and tied at the chin, with a gap in the middle where his face shows through. In the back, the end is divided into two fang-like tips, and tied with three red "eye" orbs.
  • The patterns on his coat, vest, and wings do not need to be replicated exactly.

Misc. Notes

  • The four main wings on his back are a part of his body, and he can use them to fly and hover. The additional wings on his hat and shoulder mantle are purely decorative.
  • Roughly 6'2" (188 cm) tall.

Trivia

  • He is, unbeknownst to him for a long period of time, the last of The Renegade's children and the seventh, missing Fallen. According to Luci and Astaroth, as powerful as Beelzebub is in his current state, he will not reach his full potential until he comes to realize this. Still, his history living as a "mortal" person give him a special perspective on life and ties to the earthly world, something shared possibly only by Bella Gore among the other siblings.
  • He joined Stargazer initially for the protection of a team, and figured he could benefit from his skillset. He isn't comfortable talking about his past and will consistently lie about it, about where he comes from and what his occupation was, or flat out avoid the questions if asked.
  • Beelzebub was previously associated with the inner ring of mob leaders of FLUX: Menagerie. He was a hitman who was "pals" with the most powerful of the bunch and very often took part in their meetings or was at least kept up to date with their plans because of his treasured ability to strategize and figuratively "see" more possibilities and outcomes than most. He would eventually betray and kill them all to be free of their influence, leaving that world behind.
  • As one of the Old Powers, Beelzebub's powers are mysterious, ancient, and obey different laws than does any modern form of magic. He is also capable of tearing open dimensional Rifts on his own, which allow for the Stargazers to pass through to different worlds.
  • A superb dancer and quick on his feet both in and out of battle. He seems to be able to sweep over spaces in an instant, even clearing distances that would otherwise be impossible to cross in those time frames.
  • His halo, when visible, is a swirling, chaotic ring of darkness, and surrounded by small, fly-shaped shadows that constantly weave in and out among the clouds.

Origin

Beelzebub never knew exactly where he came from, except from darkness. And that he emerged one day without any parents--or anything at all--except his name. He had always had some unexplained connection to the Older Powers, with eerie, ancient, and mysterious magic. Honing that magic and his survival skills served him well surviving on the streets, and he would eventually be able to call himself one of the most notorious and feared hitmen known to the underworld.

In the world he was born into (designation FLUX: Menagerie), Bug-types were regarded as something of vermin and lesser beings, designated to live in effectively satellite cities, and required to serve the rest of society (including doing sanitation jobs and/or "dirty work"). They were confined to underground city-states (figuratively and literally) which were locked down with strict regulations dictating who would enter and exit. The city hive that Beelzebub originated from was a particuarly huge colony, and served as a hub for syndicate activity. It housed a number of mob bosses, and was a well-known pit of organized crime with some sketchy, under-the-tagle connections to the surface. Though he, as a hitman, never swore allegiance to any one particular group, because of his job and reputation for being a renowned killer, he became well-acquainted with the inner circles. As a result, he from time-to-time had the opportunity to go to the surface, to hunt or spy on targets or to accompany mob leaders for their business runs as a bodyguard. Because of the harsh stigma against Bugs and because he lacked the high-profile "exemption" granted to the bosses (and in part to hide his own identity), he used to disguise himself as a Dragon (Flygon) to pass without being harassed. During these trips, he was careful to, whenever he could, study the mysterious Rifts which were rumored to be able to transport people to other worlds, and researched the naturally occuring cycles of such phenomana in hopes that one day he would be able to escape that world.

Needless to say, he was far from content with his position in society. When the opportunity arose, he killed the inner circle and fled the city in the chaos, making his way to an open Rift and into an entirely new world.

Past

And thus, he was surrounded by new possibility. It became apparent that the planet (designation FLUX: Principle) he had entered was infested with demons, which he knew before only as rumors, or beings of mythical origin. But here, his skills could be easily applied, and it was with relative ease that he was able to set himself up as a mercenary, slaying demons and even demon gods who threatened the existence of humanity. It was during one such fight when he discovered his own ability to cut open dimensional Rifts, though he had to work further in order to properly hone and control that power. His professionalism and success caught the attention of Hildebrand, who had been passing through the world at the time, and who approached him to ask if he would consider banding together with a group of other demon hunters. Both intrigued by the other's reputation, the two of them would face off agaisnt each other in a friendly sparring match, and develop a mutual respect for their strength. Still, Beelzebub refused the offer initially, and went his own way again.

It was not until paranoia of being possibly hunted down for his actions against the mob bosses really began to plague him that he thought again of that proposition. The strength and backing of a team of trained killers, he supposed, would provide a useful asset and possibly dissuade potential attackers. Using his tracking skills, he managed to locate Hildebrand before the God Hunter departed that world, and was introduced to a young but promising pupil who wanted to follow in the God Hunter's footsteps.

Beelzebub was entrusted with mentoring Centurion and supervising a brand new team of demon slayers. And admitedly moved by (if not pitying) his student's naiviety and idealism, and with his own preference to try to percieve things beyond the obvious, he suggested the name "Stargazer."

Present

Beelzebub now acts as the adviser for the new team. His extensive background in the killing industry and maturity made him the perfect candidate to provide guidance and oversight while his teammates began to hone their skills and learn how to operate as a unit of their own. While Centurion is designated the official "leader" of the Stargazers, there is no question that Beelzebub maintains the highest level of respect among the group. It is to him they defer, much to his dismay at times, for the decisions and designation of duties. He hopes to one day train Centurion to be confident enough in their own abilities so that they will not need to rely on him as much, but realizes they are still very young and must work to build their knowledge and proficiency in order to act comfortably on their own.

Ironically, the Stargazers would be the first people Beelzebub would really warm up to, something like a family of outcasts and dreamers. He would all but abandon his initial plans to use the team merely as protection for himself, slowly but surely beginning to care for them as a sort of father-figure. In time, he would come to see himself as responsible for their safety, and their success, and whole-heartedly devoted himself to remaining on FLUX: Principle with them. Moreoever, while not ever able to forget his past traumas, he could at last allow himself the space to start to heal from them.

He would, eventually, be tracked down by Astaroth, an angel who seemed to hold all the answers to his most personal, deepest questions: about who he was, where he came from, and how he was connected to the Old Powers. With her arrival, he would learn of his true identity, as the entity of Envy, and of the existence of others like him. He was given a proposal by his new-found "sister": to leave the human worlds, join The Fallen formally as the last of the siblings, and realize the full potential of his magic.

But he would not accept. Having lived as a "mortal" for millennia, and now having finally settled in a place he could call home, with people he could call family, he refused to once again turn his back on them and run. Astaroth, though frustrated by his refusal, would agree to instruct him, and visit from time to time in order to spar with her lost brother, and teach him how to truly reach his full potential.

Angelo

Though Beelzebub is usually very polite to people, he is the most genuine with Angelo. As his partner, Angelo is the only person that Beelzebub would ever confide in, and the only one to whom he ever disclosed the truth and details about his past. He deeply loves, dotes on, and tries to spoil Angelo whenever and however he can, including bringing them gifts and even sending secret spells when they are apart to tell Angelo how much he loves them.

Centurion

Beelzebub is Centurion's mentor and is highly respected by his pupil as the most experienced and powerful member of Stargazer. Though Centurion holds the official title of team leader, it is to Beelzebub they turn to for advice, even if this dependence means they have trouble keeping Beelzebub in line or asserting their authority over executive matters. Still, they come to develop a mutual trust towards one another that strengthens both their personal bond and the team dynamic.

Hildebrand

Beelzebub and Hildebrand can fight toe-to-toe, and respect each other as skilled and powerful demon slayers. It is to Beelzebub that Hildebrand entrusts Centurion as a pupil, and the creation of a new team of trained hunters. The two of them cannot frequently meet, but when they do, Beelzebub obliges Hildebrand with updates on the Stargazer's progress, and they exchange useful information about the state of the worlds.

Astaroth

Once Astaroth finally located Beelzebub--who was, unbeknownst to him, the seventh angel--she at once tried to persuade him to leave the mortal worlds behind and formally ally with the other siblings. Because he had no prior knowledge about who he was, or how to properly manage his magic, she took it upon herself to instruct him, even though he refused her offer to join The Fallen. She sees great potential in him once he learns to fully use his powers, but is disappointed that he insists on "dawdling" with human affairs.
