Lachlan is a young, quiet man with a odd air and attitude about him who wanders far from his family, hoping one day to win back their love. Little does he know, what they offered him wasn't love in the first place. Instead, he must learn to move on, learn about the vast and loving world they kept him hidden from, and come to love himself.

Personality

When you first meet Lachlan, you first impressions are that he is exceptionally quiet, and exceptionally pretty. His hair and eyes glisten with flecks that look like stars in the night sky, and yet those same eyes appear pleading and lifeless.
Your second impression of Lachlan is that he's incredibly weird. He has few social skills to speak of, and appears to lack common sense. His morality is skewed and he doesn't understand any culture, even the one he supposedly came from, assuming he can even accurately pinpoint where he's from, which varies depending on the maps he's presented with. He will eat anything presented to him, and can be easily won over with praise and affection, and food. Food, food food. He's not always hungry, but he is always scared of when he will be. He doesn't often know where his next meal is coming from unless he's already killed it. He is no stranger to considering eating dead bodies he's come across, no matter the age and level of decomposition. Luckily, he's always found a better source of food before then, but it is no stranger to his mind.
Lachlan, when put back in the context of society, is well-meaning if ill-fitting. He is helpful and hardworking and doesn't complain, but has a tendency to do weird things and being ambiguous on whether or not he thought it was actually a good or bad idea for the reactions of others. He's easily excited over small things like train rides and restaurants and churches, learning and reading and existing amongst a vibrant society. Things he's read about in books but has not once seen. He loves it all. Cities, villages, people. He loves everyone, even if he doesn't show it on his face. His care for the world, for each individual person is immense, at least until death. He does not see corpses as people. They are merely uninhabited shells, then. But that does not sadden him any less. He may be awkward, attention seeking, improperly educated, and stoic, but he is full of love and a lust for life, through and through.
Due to his past, while he feels emotions, he rarely shows them on his face except when they overpower him and he has an outburst, usually negative. He bottles everything up out of fear that he will still somehow get in trouble, even though his parents are no longer always looking over his shoulder. Despite his love for people, he has no love for the world, and is in fact, incredibly depressed. He's very cynical about himself, and believes that he is not as good of a person as he thought he was, and is now always second guessing everything. His thoughts? What if that's evil? His feelings? Evil. His actions? Even if you want to help, it's still evil. He hates it. He has a deeply-rooted self-loathing and abandonment issues due to being isolated, stockholmed, neglected, and, eventually, disowned. Overall, he's just a sad, chaotic neutral loose cannon.

Backstory

Lachlan came from... An interesting household, to say the least. His childhood days were spent locked inside his house, caring for his sister, and forbidden to ever, ever go outside or into the attic. They were dangerous. No windows, and doors were locked from the outside. His parents would leave him alone with his sister for weeks on end, and come back near the end of the month with new groceries and books. And then they would sleep. Lachlan loved his parents, but never knew much about them aside from the fact they had a large collection of books in the attic. If Lachlan was lucky, he'd catch his father drunk and glean a story or two of the dangerous outside world and the artifacts kept by their family. How important a task it is. How much safer they were making the world by putting all those "dangerous artifacts" only a stone's throw from their children.
But that is if he was lucky. If Lachlan was not so lucky, his sister would report some infraction, "dinner was late on the 20th," "He told me to stop whining," or his mother would catch him trying to pry information, and he would get the belt; no matter how small the complaint. It was a tumultuous time. He had the opportunity to tell on his sister as well, but despite his resentment, he never did. She was so small. He didn't want her to hurt.

This continued for sixteen years. It was a long time after he'd turned sixteen, about the middle of the year, when he'd made the mistake. What was in the attic, anyway?
What was in the attic was horror incarnate. Book after book was filled with nonsense. But it was nonsense that made sense. Nonsense that made terrible, world-shattering sense. Colors between colors and geometry incomprehensible. Beings that wouldn't let you die, creatures that walked with your form, all sorts of ways to use a corpse. All sorts of ways to use a soul.
When Lachlan, stunned, wandered out of the attic, he was met with his sister. His sweet little sister.
And she told on him. His parents, in a rage, after the inevitable beating let him gather just what would fit in a messenger bag and leave. They yelled about how ashamed they were. How betrayed. How they only asked one thing of him and he didn't listen. How he was a mistake. How they loved him, but they couldn't anymore.
And with clothes, A bow, and books on plant and animal identification, Lachlan had his first emotional encounter with grass. And as he wandered the small woods where his home mansion lay, the rest became history.

Now

He's just vibing He's here.

And in the end, all of our pursuits will be fruitful, but meaningless. It's poetic, but even speaking is meaningless too.
