Overview:
A  former Dark Mage who once used his Magic in sport of killing innocent  people. He met his match in the likes of Frea and Laxus, and by some  uncanny turn of events- the backlash of one of the Energy Dragon  Slayer's Spells broke what evil hold his Magic had put on his mind,  allowing him proper thought and action  to repay for his crimes.

Where  he is now is unknown, but he has his mind and his will back and has  made a turn around of his life, with but one person to thank for his  freedom. Because of the dark and insidious nature of his Magic, he was  consumed by it's evil nature and eventually turned to evil deeds,  regardless of wanting to or not. He fell to Darkness and had stayed that  way until his meeting with Frea and Laxus, wherever after his mind was  made free of the corruption of his Magic once more, and he could atone  for the things he had done. Namely, he turned himself into the Magic  Council and served a sentence of 8 years in prison during the Time Skip  that affected the Tenrou Team.

Upon  the Tenrou Team's return Rified sought Frea out to thank her for her  help in setting him free of the corruption, and went so far as to help  her in the Dragon Fight that encased Crocus during the Eclipse Gate  incident. Being out from under the control and corruption of his Magic,  Rified has proven quite the easy-going individual, and quite willing to  assist where he is needed- and is free of what murderous and slightly  sadistic tendencies that came with the corruption.

 Since the Eclipse Gate incident,  Rified has disappeared and hasn't  been seen since, expect for the odd circumstances involving a place known  as the Reach, and the consequences following Frea's battle with  Mordren.

Magic:
Death  Magic is a Lost Magic and one that isn't practiced regularly- for  obvious reasons. It is one of the few Magics labeled illegal in Fiore,  as for it's namesake, it's sole purpose is to take away the lives of  living creatures with swift, easy efficiency. The basis of it is to take  hold of a living creatures Life Energy and strip it away all at once to  kill- but the Magic can be used in moderation to simply weaken the  target, render them powerless and strip away strength. FOr this reason,  the longer one fights against a user of Death Magic, the more weak they  grow the longer the battle rages.

Adversely,  the Magic can be used not to kill at all. It can be utilized (with no  small amount of control and skill) to simply serve as a physical force  to batter against the opponent and even serve as small detonations to  pound enemies.

This  Magic comes at a terrible price though, those who use it must keep  careful control over their emotions and their actions lest they start to  fall to the darkness and the inherent evil Nature that spins so closely  with Death Magic. They have to constantly keep track of their actions  and motivations, lest their magic corrupt them and take control- leading  to potential slaughter of innocent people, and even loved ones.
