Xicoli

The xicoli are an intelligent spacefaring species, though low in number. A catastrophic incident wiped life from the home planet, reducing the surface to a barren scorched wasteland. Their dwindled numbers now only account for those that were offplanet during the event and the offspring of those hapless survivors. They are few and far between, spread out among the stars. The once proud race lost much of their culture in the collapse of their home and government; scientists, craftsmen, and explorers turning to lives of piracy or trying to scrape by under whichever galactic laws cover the corner they holed up in, usually sticking to small groups or trying to scavenge alone.
They seek to restore their numbers and find a new home, though stretched so thin with so few and far between, keeping the genetic lines diverse comes with its own challenges. Xicoli meeting will quickly devolve into efforts to further their numbers if not of similar bloodlines. Many seek hybrids to try and keep the bloodlines diverse, to either mix with them or, the more scientific, pulling what of the species genome they can from the hybrids' dna. They aren't a primarily pack-based species, though some do stick together in groups, furthering the spread of the individuals.
There is said to be an ancestor species before the xicoli, that possibly made the xicoli, perhaps lost to buried archives that were once stored on the homeplanet; stories now only in legend, of huge dragonic runners that raced across the stars.
