ABILITY

The user can animate and command plush toys. Using plushies as a 'vessel', flesh/tissue grows from within the plushie, giving it the musculature to move and make attacks depending on what they are. For example, cat plushies can scratch people, burger plushie can trap people in its buns. The plushies can also exhibit personality traits depending on how they were treated by their owner. They bleed when cut.

PERSONALITY

phlegmatic | reserved | absent-minded | detached | slow | tidy
Hugh tends to have a stoic and detached front to him. Quite reserved, he is difficult to make laugh, difficult to ease up, but he will remain civil to others. A certain gruffness does start to come out the more familiar he is with someone as he starts to open up. He can seem stern, but doesn’t usually mean things in an angry or displeased way. He doesn't have a lot to say, but he still has a lot of thoughts.
In keeping with his cool-headed temperament, he generally doesn't get flustered or anxious easily, and it can help him focus on a situation when he puts his mind to it. On the other hand, he can also be absent-minded with a high tendency to space out when not doing anything particularly complicated.
He is a tidy person, and likes to keep things relatively in order. Sometimes, a day of absent-minded room cleaning, finished with a well-deserved cup of coffee, makes a good day. He’s happy to take his time on things at his own leisurely pace.

BACKSTORY

Based on BNHA world.

Two mafia/yakuza families made a pact; a quirk marriage between two people, one from each family, with specially selected quirks. The agreement was to produce several children who would be split up between the families and raised to carry out each family’s criminal undertakings with the help of the strong quirks they hoped would be created from this union. Hugh was the first child born from this quirk marriage. His mother had been raised by her family to be a cold-hearted killer, unquestioningly obeying the orders of the superiors, and his father a relatively high ranking member of the gang. He remembers his mother, barely anything of his father, and strangers in dark suits who would come visit every now and then. They tried to act friendly with him, but he always felt uncomfortable with the vibes they gave him, the way they looked at him like he was an interesting object, watching him like they expected something out of him.

When he was barely of schooling age, they began to put him through the same training as his mother. His quirk wasn’t well developed for hurting things at that point, to their disappointment it seemed, but nonetheless they put him through “lessons” to lead up to learning how to incapacitate and assassinate people. However, his mother had a change of heart. She arranged for Amelia, a friend, to take him away, completely out of the country. One day, he heard loud arguing in the house and a huge ruckus. By the end of it, he was popped onto a plane, watching the city, his mother, his home, shrink and disappear.

He found himself in Italy, where he was to live his new life, away from whatever was happening back at home. He lived with a frail, elderly lady who called herself his auntie. She was nice, but illness got the better of her and she passed in just a few years after meeting him. Amelia legally adopted him, now as “Hugh Pelosi”, and acted as his guardian - but she was always ever just that. Someone to dutifully, but unemotionally watch over him, and politely tell him to eat his vegetables. During the day, he went to school, pretending to be quirkless, so as not to attract attention. There were some who tried to tease him for it, but he had grown a stoic side to him by that point and tolerated it. He turned out to be a reserved boy, having few friends, and spending time on quiet hobbies, such as sewing plush toys and felting.

When he was older, Amelia told him the mafia families hadn’t abandoned the pact, and were still bent on making “perfect soldiers” from quirk marriages. He had full and half siblings out there, who were going through the same thing he almost went through. It also meant his parents were still likely still alive.

Eventually, one of the mafia families figured out where he was hiding. They sent some agents in an attempt to ‘repossess’ him and kill off Amelia as punishment for her betrayal. He and Amelia manage to escape with their lives and flee the small town they’d been living in to Japan where it all started. With his fake identity now rendered useless, he reverted back to his true name and entered a hero course, wanting to learn how to protect himself and Amelia, and also dig deeper into the mafia underground to root out his “original family” and possibly find these siblings of his who were trapped with them.

As a young adult, he began working as a hero under an agency, building skills and experience. The growing publicity of his name and face helped find his first sibling. He was contacted by his biological brother, who had also escaped from the mafia family and had figured out that they were siblings. They got to know each other and bonded over their atypical origins and upbringings.

Unbeknownst to either of them, one of the mafia families backstabbed the other by getting their one of their quirk marriage children to assassinate the other children from the other family in order to gain advantage over the other family, triggering a feud between the two families. This extended to Hugh and his brother who are included as targets for assassination as products of the quirk marriage pact. His brother was murdered by their half-sibling who the family successfully raised to operate as a villain.

Hugh pursued this villainous half-sibling to the city where the bulk of this feud appeared to be happening, discovering he had even more half-siblings either operating as villains or being “trained”. He had a fight with the one who attempted to murder him, ending in allowing the authorities to capture and put them into jail. Now remaining in Japan, still operating as a hero, he is still working to find other possible children trapped with the mafia/yakuza to relieve them of a life of forced villainy and maybe even to find his parents if they’re still alive.

TRIVIA

Large appetite. Sometimes he doesn't even realise how much he's eaten in one sitting, because he gets distracted and all and just keeps eating.
Probably vitamin D deficient.

DESIGN NOTES

If drawing him, please note he has two bags that he carries with his work outfit: 1) Bag 1, carried on his back - contains plushie 'skins' so he can carry multiple with him and use when needed 2) Bag 2, more if a pouch strapped to his leg - contains threading needle and thread usually for plushie repair (outlined here)

RELATIONSHIPS

Rikuto
Partner

Absent-minded, academic, and sometimes very random; his boyfriend who he met in Japan who works in hero support tech and special ops. They met through work and often find themselves working together. Despite being rather straight-faced on the outside, Hugh still likes to express his care and affection towards him, often through physical gestures and actions.
