I used to think that I would die alone, another body on the battlefield. But...joining D-SEC changed that. I have a family now, thanks to them.
Valentine Karstag - who mostly goes by "Val" around his friends - is a former Noxian soldier who once attempted to attack a city near Luxi's capital city. When his squadron was defeated several miles outside of town and his allies retreated, Valentine, with a mangled right arm, was left for dead. It was then that Cyril Dynatius and the King's Guard, who hadn't even been a part of the battle, wandered down among the carnage and saw that he was still alive. Not caring that he was the enemy, they carefully hoisted him up and carried him to safety.
Valentine had always been quiet, and he'd long lost any love for the world that he was a part of, but being around these strange new people started to open his eyes to the idea that there might be more to life than dying for a cause you don't believe in. Terry Donos built a new right arm for him and helped teach him how to use it, Cheryl showed him his new room and the rest of the D-SEC headquarters, and Cyril formally invited him to live with them, at least until he recovered his strength. Taken aback, Valentine accepted, and would quickly come to love his newfound friends and find comfort in the new life they gave to him.
Valentine is a recurring character in Time of Death: The Endless War, and works at D-SEC with the rest of the King's Guard. He doesn't contribute as much to D-SEC's cause as some of the others do, but having been a soldier before, he has some good advice to give to Kit and his squad.
Cyril Dynatius
[ subject of gratitude ]
It was Cyril's decision to bring Valentine in, even though he was a Noxian soldier and practically on his deathbed when he was found. Ever since, the two of them have shared a sort of understanding, and have become great friends. Valentine spars with him often and frequently offers to watch his kid.
Terry Donos
[ object of affection ]
Although Valentine grew to be close to all of his friends at D-SEC, he found himself growing attached to Terry the most, and that attachment eventually developed into adoration and one-sided love that never quite leaves him. Even so, he's become decently good at hiding it, and doesn't allow his feelings to get in the way of their peaceful friendship.
Cheryl Lucia
[ confidant and friend ]
Cheryl, although standoffish towards him at first, ended up becoming a close friend to whom Valentine can share his woes and joys with. She feels the safety to do the same, and they often meet up to talk about life over a drink or two. Valentine thinks very highly of her, even though she usually wins when they practice sparring.
