Diana soon found out after being recruited that the military was far less extraordinary than people often romanticized it to be. The training and schedules were rigorous and the nearly inhumane ways recruits were instructed would leave Diana with life long anxieties and PTSD. While in the Marine Corps, she met another recruit who had also joined in hopes of making a better life for himself. The two bonded easily and Diana would come to rely on him to continue serving. While stationed on a Federation class military ship en route to a rendezvous point after a mission, the ship was attacked by organisms that lived within the vacuum of space. As Diana tried to save her comrades, she witnessed her friend violently murder their lieutenant and commander amid the chaos of the attack. He then gave her the ultimatum of either serving as his second command and furthering his goals or to go into hiding to never be able to inform the Federation. When she refused, he shot her in her arm and left her behind in the ruins of their starship that was still under attack. Diana managed to flee on an escape pod once she realized her remaining crew members had all been killed and flew to the nearest inhabited location, which happened to be a trading post located on an asteroid.

The betrayal of someone she had considered almost family left a dark shadow over Diana’s heart and mind. She swore that she would bring him to justice for the heinous crimes he had committed. In her current condition however she was in no position to do so. After these events, she would go on to meet Captain Fray and would exchange to work on his ship in exchange for her safety.
