Amos makes a lot of bad decisions. He has/had a relationship with Rose at some point. He used to drink and fight a lot until he passed out on the train tracks. He lost his legs, but lived.
He is temporarily living with Will and Ruth, and is the one who discovered Mary and helped Will and Ruth is rescuing her. He has a soft spot for her and tries to be on his best behavior around her.
