Kaya Maruya (丸谷 佳純 Maruya Kaya) was a second-year student from Shiratorizawa Academy and the boys volleyball team's manager. She is currently a professional model. Her fans call her Maruka (まるか). Contents [show]Kaya is a girl of average and fair skin. She has medium length strawberry blonde hair that she normally keeps tied in low pigtails. She has blue eyes that people have said look very kind. She is noted by many to be very pretty, and she is well known in school because of this. She is normally seen with a gentle smile on her face, and she often hides her other feelings behind that smile. She can often be seen wearing her school uniform, which consists of a white blazer, a light blue dress shirt, a purple bow, a purple skirt, and black socks. While doing club activities, she wears a white tracksuit with black accents and a purple-lined collar and a black shirt beneath. Her casual clothes often consist of feminine and stylish clothes. Kaya is known for her indiscriminate kindness. She treats everyone she meets with the same warmth and friendliness that she treats her friends. She makes an effort to talk to everyone around her and create a welcoming atmosphere. It is because of this that she is so popular and well-liked at school. She enjoys having as many friends as possible. She is humble about her popularity to the point of coming across as oblivious, as she insists she isn't as popular as people think. She has been shown to be incredibly persuasive when she wants to be, some even calling her surprisingly manipulative. From the outside, she seems carefree and a bit air-headed, but she is actually very intelligent and observant. She gets high marks in school, and she is able to pick up on subtle changes in the people around her. She is compassionate to the people around her, always helping however she can. She has a habit of ignoring her own needs in order to help other people. She is a hard worker, and she doesn't like leaving work that she can do to other people. She is very honest, coming across as blunt at times. She tends to blurt the first thing that comes to her mind. As a child, Kaya spent a lot of time around her brother, Itaru. Her father often traveled abroad for work, so it was mostly just her, her brother, and her mother. She and her brother were babysat by their neighbors when their mother was at work. They became close to the neighbor children that were around the same age as them. The neighbor kids liked to play volleyball, so Kaya and Itaru tried to play, too. While Itaru picked it up quickly and was naturally talented, Kaya was bad at it. However, when they would watch recordings of volleyball games, she was the one who quickly picked up on intricate strategies and differing techniques. She was intrigued by the way the game worked. When Itaru began playing volleyball competitively in junior high, she always attended his games. When Itaru began attending Shiratorizawa Academy on a scholarship, he was made a starting member on the volleyball team. Kaya still watched all of his games. She was amazed by the overwhelming strength of the team. She studied hard so she could pass Shiratorizawa's difficult entrance exam, and she eventually got in. She became the volleyball team's manager as soon as she could. Her educated observations about the players and their opponents proved to be very useful to the team, and she quickly became an important part of the team. However, outside of the volleyball team, she was popular for a different reason. She quickly became known as the school's idol because of her warm and inviting personality. She made an effort to talk to all of her classmates, and she even talked with students in other classes and years. After high school, she moved into an apartment with Ushijima. She was scouted by a modeling agency shortly after graduating, and she began work as a professional model. Kaya has a surprising good understanding of volleyball. She is very observant, so she can easily spot strengths and shortcomings in order to help her team. Players will often come to her to ask her if she notices anything they can fix about their playing. Her understanding of the game would make her a very tactical player, but unfortunately, she has no technique, and she doesn't like to play sports. RelationshipsMaruya Itaru[ Kaya || Onīsan ] She spent a lot of time with him when they were children, and they are fairly close in age. Itaru is a lot more energetic and fast-paced than Kaya, so he often dragged her around and got her involved in his antics. He is the reason she discovered her interest in volleyball. After he left to attend college, they couldn't see each other as much, but they still text and call each other often. After the timeskip, both of them have claimed a bit of fame, and their reputations feed into each other. Kaya often asks Itaru to appear in photoshoots with her. She is beginning to become exasperated by all the people asking for her to set them up with her brother. Ushijima Wakatoshi[ Maruya / Kaya || Ushijima-san / Wakatoshi-kun ] Their relationship began with Kaya just admiring Ushijima because of his skill in volleyball. At first, she was a bit intimidating by his strong, but silent personality, thinking that he just didn't like her. However, as she talked to him more, she realized he was just a bit awkward in social interactions and didn't speak much. She started trying to talk to him more, and the more he warmed up to her, the more he began to initiate conversations with her. He appreciated all the work she did as a manager, but he also began to appreciate her presence as someone he cared about. They began to date in the middle of Kaya's second year of high school (Ushijima's third year). After graduating high school, Kaya moved in with Ushijima. They have a very laid back relationship, and it is clear how much they care for each other. Even if they don't get to spend a lot of time together because of their busy schedules, they are content in the little moments they spend together. Both are the type of people to work very hard in whatever they do, so they have to look out for each other to make sure they don't push themselves too hard. Usually, it is Kaya who pushes herself too hard, so Ushijima worries about her a lot. While Kaya is very open with her feelings and expresses her affection very readily, Ushijima is more reserved and shows his affection through his actions rather than words. Tendō Satori[ Kaya-chan || Tendō-san ] Tendō likes to tease Kaya just as he teases other people, but it doesn't rile her up as it does other people. Despite him being older than her, she isn't afraid to scold him when he teases someone too relentlessly. Surprisingly, he actually listens to her most of the time. Shirabu Kenjirō[ Maruya-san || Shirabu-kun ] They were in the same class in their first and second year of high school, and since they were both involved with the volleyball team, they became good friends. They are both intelligent and get good grades, so they often work on schoolwork and study for tests together. Goshiki Tsutomu[ Maruya-san || Goshiki-kun ] Goshiki is very fond of Kaya, seeing her almost as an older sister. He tends to act like her bodyguard at tournaments and games, especially when other teams' players look at her or try to talk to her. She scolds him if he gets too heated. She looks out for him like a mother would, which embarrasses him sometimes. Hirano Chika and Itō Wakana[ Kayan || Chika-chan, Wakana-chan ] Chika and Wakana are Kaya's closest friends at school. They are quite close, and they can often be seen together outside of school. Chika and Wakana were childhood friends, but they quickly accepted Kaya as their friend in high school, forming their trio. They were Kaya's first friends in high school. While many people tried to become friends with Kaya because of her popularity, Chika and Wakana care about her and think of her as a genuine friend. Akita Midori[ Kaya-san || Midori-chan ] They met when their boyfriends, Ushijima and Kageyama, started playing on the same team after high school. After that, they became good friends, and they often propose going on double dates. Midori looks up to Kaya for her perfectly feminine personality, sometimes wishing she could be more girly like her. Kaya always says that she likes Midori's energy and outgoing ways, finding it charming. Shiraishi Maho[ Kaya-san || Maho-chan ] They met through Midori. The first time Kaya saw Maho, she thought she was gorgeous. She immediately approached the younger girl and asked if she would consider modeling with her. Maho agreed to model with Kaya in one photoshoot, and they became good friends after that. Some people say that the way Kaya calls Maho pretty is bad for Maho's already large ego. |
