About

Sukina is a main character in the fanfiction Half-Souled, which takes place in the universe of the anime Soul Eater and involves some of its canon characters. The story is set after the events of the anime ended (although slightly differently, in which Medusa had barely escaped Marie Mjolnïr's last attack and gone to lay quietly for a long time), adding on a few years to where the main cast has grown and are beginning to start families (some other characters have done the same). It follows a few glimpses into the characters' early lives, but mostly focuses on their teen years, when they spend most of their time at the academy. Sukina gets involved in some trouble during all this, to put it lightly.

Sukina Stein is 15 years old, and has finally started school at the DWMA as a Meister. She's been hidden away in her house for 7 years, ever since her mother, Medusa, was killed. Her father, Professor Stein, is glad for her to start school, but he's unaware of the power of the witch half of her soul, which she keeps secret for fear of being killed.
Emily Evans is 12, daughter of the Death Scythe Soul Evans and the talented Meister Maka Evans, and she's been a Weapon at the DWMA for a month. She ended her first partnership yesterday, and she's about to lose hope that she'll connect to someone again... until she meets Sukina.
The two quickly become friends and form a partnership, making their way through school. Soon, however, the darkness of Sukina's identity starts to cause problems, and they're on a greater scale than anyone had anticipated. Everyone is forced to take sides, and Emily must answer the burning question being thrown at her every day: Will she be able to forgive Sukina for what she's done?

Personality

Sukina considers herself a reserved individual; she's very introverted in nature. She doesn't like socializing very much except within a small circle of people, and is shy and hesitant to branch out to new people. It takes a while to earn her trust and faith, but once a person has it, it's very unlikely it will waiver. She also dislikes exposure of herself, and is extremely content with wearing pants and a jacket even if it's very hot outside. She does, however, prefer winter and fall over summer because it's much more comfortable to wear a coat in cooler weather than in warmer weather.
Sukina thinks things through before she acts, thinking before she speaks unless she can't help it. She doesn't speak a lot, tends not to speak above "an inside voice" unless she is with someone she is extremely comfortable with, or if she is on a mission and it's required for her to yell to be heard. She is very focused on academics and doing her best, because although she doesn't particularly like being around a lot of people, she does like going to school (and later on going to work). This stems from how she spent most of her childhood and teen years, at home with only her father (once he came home from work). A lot of her education was more or less self taught, with the majority of it requiring Sukina to look things up and figure them out on her own. She is very intelligent and was more than capable, but this resulted in a very strong sense of inner motivation. This helped her in many tasks, especially once she was allowed to interact in the world on her own, and it still continues to help her.
Sukina is very much able to take care of herself, possessing cunning and wit enough to solve most problems without help. If she does ask for help, it's either because she's absolutely stuck and can't think of any solutions, or because the solution requires an extra pair of hands. She looks out for herself first unless she is worrying about someone very dear to her, and if that's the case she will do whatever possible to take care of that other person.
Sukina possesses a good amount of flexibility, agility, speed, and strength. She keeps her figure in shape because as a Meister, her top priority is being able to inflict damage without taking as much as possible. This was especially true when she was the Meister of Emily Evans, whose weapon form was a lance. Melee combat required Sukina to be as agile as possible, and strong enough to take a hit if dodging wasn't possible. Helping to boost her combat ability, Sukina also eventually masters the use of externally projecting her Soul Force, manipulating it to strike similar to bolts of lightning. She has an easier time with this ability due to her father's mastery of it, which was passed on to her. Similar to Soul Force, Sukina also possesses magic from the witch half of her soul. This manifests in the form of darkness and shadows, in her ability to control and manipulate them. She is capable of solidifying shadow to form tangible and prehensile tendrils (as well as other objects/shapes) that are able to do various things, expelling magic in the form of black lightning that can range in various degrees of power and strength, and has the ability to merge into shadows and travel within them. She didn't use these magic abilities at all before discovering them at thirteen, and very rarely used them of her free will until after she attempted the attack on the DWMA and regained control of her mind and body.

Along with her personality in her normal state, Sukina has another personality within her. This is onset by a loss of control over the half-witch side of her soul, and was especially present in her late teen years. In this state, Sukina is especially erratic, loud, and sadistic, while still retaining the intelligence, wit, and cunning of her normal self. She disregards other individuals unless they could be of use to her, and even then she does not care for them much. She prefers command over companionship, and seeks to fulfill her own needs, wants, and desires before anyone or anything else. This often comes at the cost of hurting other people, whether that's a small or mortal injury, verbal abuse, or even death.
Sukina is more likely to use her magic in this state, simply because she doesn't care if she's found out or spotted. She mostly uses this to torment others, for her enjoyment or to get information. During the time when Sukina has not yet been exposed as being born half-witch, she had to keep her powers and identity a secret. If she lost control, however, that became increasingly difficult. Her father (and later Emily) helped her with this by keeping her in check with a serum that would calm the witch half of her soul and allow her normal self to regain control.

Later on, after Sukina defeats the madness inside her, she gains other magic abilities that stem from her original powers. She is able to heal small wounds, repair large injuries, create protective shields, and even revive the dead. However, using these abilities takes much more energy than if she used her original powers, linked closer to her inner darkness.

Background

Sukina was born in secret, her existence being a taboo. Her father was a human and her mother was a witch; her father was the most powerful meister to graduate from the DWMA, Franken Stein*, and her mother was one of the most cunning, deceitful, and powerful witches of the time, who had successfully managed to revive a kishin, Medusa Gorgon*.
After Medusa barely lived through an attack from Marie Mjolnïr*, she began to rethink her position and her goals. So many times she and other witches had tried to bring chaos and thwart order, only for order to win. And why? They had no reason except the inner desire of all witches: to simply bring chaos upon on the world. At that moment, Medusa had an epiphany, and she chose to fight the desire for chaos. She considered bringing herself straight to the DWMA, although she knew it would lead to her immediate death. Instead, she sought out a connection with only Professor Stein. It took a lot of time, trials, and trust, but they made one. It continued to grow into something else entirely, and soon enough, Sukina was born.

Sukina spent much of her time inside the house, reading with her parents and helping where she could. Both her mother and father taught her when she reached the age where she would have gone to preschool and primary school; her mother would teach her some during the day and her father would teach her some when he returned home from work. She would go outside with her father on occasion, to help with preparing for the day Medusa came out as good to the DWMA. Sukina would also tag along sometimes when Stein went to important meetings with Death, as Marie would often bring her two children, Sif and Loki, for all three of them to play. The former head Grim Reaper played babysitter (willingly, for some reason). If questions ever arose about Sukina's mother, Stein would simply use the lie that she had left them after Sukina was born, and move on to another topic.

As a few years passed, Medusa began to go out into the city and masquerade as a human to remain familiar with the layout, using her soul protect to conceal her witch soul. She and Stein began to feel ready to bring themselves and Sukina to the DWMA, but they were still unsure for the moment. They wanted to wait just a little longer, until everything was planned.
On the morning of Sukina's 8th birthday, they decided that they would come forward and reveal the truth the next day. Sukina wasn't sure at the time why her parents seemed so happy, but it was her birthday so she decided she would be happy too. Her father went off to work, like normal, and her mother made breakfast for Sukina and stayed home for a while before she went off to the grocery store to buy ingredients for a birthday cake. She promised her daughter she'd be back in time to make lunch, and left the house to go into the city. Later on, Medusa began to feel a strange headache. She'd dealt with these before, they were her desires to bring chaos, as a witch, trying to resurface. She reached into her pocket for a drug she took to control it, but it was empty. She'd forgotten to grab more before she'd left the house. She knew that if she stayed put she would die, but dropping her groceries and running for the edge of town wouldn't present a great image either. She had two choices, and she took the latter. She ran for her life towards the edge of town, hoping, begging, pleading that she would make it in time.
As she passed the DWMA, her soul protect released itself, and she was not the only one to notice. She pressed on and kept running, now for her life, knowing that she might not make it. Not even a few minutes later, was she cornered and killed by Soul* and Maka Evans*. Sukina waited for hours at home, trying to think of reasons why her mother hadn't returned. She had no idea of her mother's true identity as a witch. That night, as her father walked in with a heavy head and a heavy heart, she learned the truth. Her mother had once been one of the most ruthless witches alive, and now she was dead.

Sukina spent the entirety of the next eight years of her life inside her house, hiding from the outside world that wanted to kill her. If she showed any signs of having witch powers by her 15th birthday, she would stay inside, and if she didn't she would go to school as a Meister at the DWMA. She passed time by teaching herself most of what she knew, and experimenting on herself in the same fashion as her father once did to his own body. She tore herself apart and sewed everything back together again and again and again and again, all to try and understand the other half of her soul, but she never discovered anything useful. She began to wonder if she was just wasting her time, until one day her powers revealed themselves. She had magic, dark witch magic. She was thrilled to have found something, but she knew that if she told her father she'd never be let out of the house. Sukina decided to keep her powers a secret, and practiced with them when her father was off teaching at the DWMA. She managed to keep it under wraps long enough for her to turn 15, for her father to believe the witch in her was dormant, and for her to be allowed to start school as a Meister.

Relationships

Emily Evans

[ Weapon Partner ]
Emily and Sukina met on Sukina's first day at the DWMA. Emily had recently had to sever her last partnership, and had decided to skip class for the time being. Sukina walked in on this young girl sitting against the wall crying, and although she was uncertain about how she should go about introducing herself, she felt something pulling her to Emily. Sukina walked over and asked if she was alright, and the two felt an instant connection before any more words were said. Emily showed Sukina around after that, and decided to go back to class. Later on that day, they became weapon partners.
Emily stood beside Sukina even when she thought she had no one, and has helped her through some of her darkest times. Sukina has returned the favor many times over, and the two girls have become very close to each other. Emily didn't turn on Sukina when she found out she was half witch, or even when she confessed to killing Maka. Emily promised she would protect Sukina with her life, as her weapon partner, and that's exactly what she did. During the battle of the DWMA, as it was all ending, Nat aimed to kill Sukina with Toku, as he was transformed into a katana. He began to bring him down, but Emily jumped in front of Sukina to save her life. This jerked Sukina out of the madness, giving her true self the strength to take back control and become free from the madness inside her. Emily died right as her partner returned, but Sukina was able to restore her to life. They are still close friends, and Sukina eventually ends up teaching Emily's two children, at the DWMA.

Toku Nakatsukasa

[ Lover (Eventually) ]
Toku first saw Sukina when she walked into school on her first day; she was drawing a lot of attention with her stitches and the bolt through her neck. Sukina was very quiet and didn't talk to anyone except Emily, who she became friends (and weapon partners) with after comforting her in the hallway. Emily knew Toku already, and Sukina tagged along when Emily went to meet up with Toku and Nat for class. At first, Toku only thought Sukina was cute. He thought her stitches and whatnot were kind of weird, but they were cool to him. She was very quiet and didn't say anything, so he really didn't have anything else to go off of until he knew her a bit better through Emily and Sif. Sukina thought Toku was the most obnoxious thing she'd ever seen and heard. He was loud, boastful, and extremely annoying, the pure personification of all 12-year old boys. She detested him and avoided any interaction with him at all if it was possible. They were complete opposites and Sukina had no desire to change that. Things mostly continued at that pace as a year passed, but Sukina began to realize that Toku had feelings for her. She continued to push him away, but to no effect. She was more focused on fighting off her insanity, of which Toku had no idea. She kept up the act that she was okay, but Toku always felt something was off. Eventually, Sukina couldn't hold back her other side anymore, and she gave into it. In the middle of the night, the insanity took over her soul, and she became a full witch. Emily tried to stop her, but it was no use. Sukina's insanity vanished into the night to find other witches and make a plan to attack the DWMA.

The next day, a meeting was held to discuss what had happened. Soul (Emily's father), Nat, Black Star (Toku's father), and almost the entire group immediately moved to kill Sukina, and Stein (who had hoped with all his being that this day would never come) eventually gave in to the majority's decision. Emily had been crying and protesting throughout the whole meeting and Sif had been supporting her, but Toku had been completely silent. He wanted so bad to yell and scream and defend Sukina like Emily and Sif had, but he couldn't. He was frozen in his place, and he was scared. The girl he loved was a witch? She was the one that killed Emily's mom? He couldn't wrap his head around any of it. He had terrible thoughts running through his head beside that, thoughts of giving it all up to become a kishin. He knew his father's family had gone down that path and had all been killed, but if he was beside Sukina he didn't care. Sif came and talked to him later on, and tried to calm him down. It worked a little bit, but not long after, the witches (and Sukina) made a small attack on the school. Nat, as Toku's meister, wanted to try and kill Sukina right there and then. Toku, however, "accidentally" transformed out of his weapon form just in time so that he wouldn't have to kill her. The witches got away unscathed and Nat was angry at Toku for ruining his chance. Toku said he was sorry for the "accident", but Emily and Sif knew Toku had done it on purpose to protect Sukina. Toku believed the girl he cared about was still in there somewhere, and he would wait for her to come back.
After Nat's retaliation at their first attack, the witches decided to kidnap him and start another. This began the real battle between the witches and the DWMA, and Toku had no choice but to fight. He dropped in with Emily and Sif to where Nat was being held hostage, stopping Sukina from killing him and hurting him any further. Toku charged at Sukina to fight her hand-to-hand and distract her, although he avoided doing any real damage to her. He knew where to hit her to stun her, and was proud of himself for keeping up with a Meister he held in high regard, knowing Sukina's acrobatic skills and agility. Sukina was called away not much later, and Toku was allowed a few moments to preprare himself. After Nat was rescued, he and Toku fought against the witches. Toku tried his best to distract Nat from going after Sukina and to fight other witches instead, but Nat cornered her as the battle wound down. Sukina was heavily wounded and not strong enough to fight back. Nat raised Toku's blade and prepared to bring it down on Sukina, but Toku transformed out of his weapon form in time. He begged Nat not to hurt Sukina, crying and screaming. He knew that the real Sukina was still in there somewhere, and he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he hurt her. Nat was furious with Toku, and he forcefully transformed him back to a sword. He was going to kill Sukina and make her pay, whether she was a witch or not. Toku sobbed to himself at the thought of it, shutting his eyes and preparing for the moment that would break him.
After the battle was over and everything was okay, Sukina was not. She was terrified of what people would think of her, and didn't talk to anyone except her dad and Emily (and only a little to them). It took quite a bit of encouragement to get her to her graduation party (since Emily had become a death scythe in the battle), but she came. Toku noticed that she mostly stayed to the side, and eventually she went to leave. He ran after her, only managing to stop her by grabbing onto her arm. She stopped and looked at him, and he apologized. He asked her if they could talk, and if she would hear what he had to say. She obliged him. He then (awkwardly) confessed how he felt about her, talking about everything that had happened and why he'd done it. He talked about how he'd felt in the beginning, how he'd felt at the lows, how he'd felt at the highs, and how he felt now. His face was red during the whole thing, but Sukina had stayed and listened with a smile on her face. Toku finally broke the ice and said what he really wanted to. He asked Sukina if they could be more than friends- a lot more. Sukina said yes.

Soon after this they began dating, and that continued strong for ten years (with a few ups and downs, of course). Once Toku gathered the confidence, he proposed to Sukina and they tied the knot at 30 and 27. About a year later, Sukina announced that she was pregnant with twins, and everything was all fun and good until she reached eight months-- Toku had to be positioned as the Death Scythe in Oceania, all the way across the world. The last Death Scythe there had retired, and no one else was available to take the spot. Sif volunteered to go to Oceania and let Toku take his place in New York, Emily volunteered to go and let Toku take her place in Death City, but Toku followed the order and packed up his things. He made Nat promise that as soon as the baby came, he wanted to come back and at least see Sukina. And with that, he went off. He called Sukina as often as possible, whether through the phone or through a video call. She gave him updates on how everything was going at school with her class, and he gave her updates on how everything was going over in Australia. Unfortunately, Sukina went into labor earlier than expected. Toku was rushed over to the states and back to Death City, and was immediately in tears when he saw his new family. He was now the father of twins: a healthy baby boy, Ichirou, and a healthy baby girl, Grey (Star). (Thankfully, another Death Scythe was made soon after, and they were sent to fill the spot in Oceania so Toku could stay in Death City with Sukina and their kids.)

Everything went fine as the twins grew up, they eventually began working together as weapon partners, but everything went south when a full-blooded kishin was created, almost instantly, by being fed hundreds of human souls all at once. Hundreds of millions more smaller kishin eggs were formed right after, and an army started to swarm the whole world. Every continent was at war, but the majority of the fighting was concentrated in Death City. Toku was incredibly worried about Sukina the entire time, she was constantly exhausted from putting up a protective magic barrier to keep out the kishins from a small base where the survivors had concentrated. She functioned on very little sleep, and served as the chief medical expert if the need arose, along with going out into the field every day to fight off hordes of kishins with Toku as her weapon. But one day, out of nowhere, larger, more powerful kishins joined the normal group and broke the barrier before Sukina, Toku, and everyone else could recover. Most people ran, but a few stayed behind to fight. This consisted of Emily and Death, their children Aaron and Katelynn, Grey and Ichirou, Sif and his sister Loki, and Toku and Sukina. They were all split up across the grounds and they fought hard, giving every ounce of their energy to staying alive. Toku promised Sukina he would look out for her if she needed to rest, and he promised her he'd keep her safe. The brief moment of sweetness was interrupted by a scream: Grey's scream. Toku and Sukina rushed over to where Ichirou was struggling to fight off kishins and defend his sister, who'd dropped him when she was stabbed in the arm.
Toku worked with his son to help him as Sukina began using her magic to heal Grey's arm, but as soon as Sukina finished, Toku was knocked aside and Ichirou knocked back by a large kishin. It grinned maliciously as it looked down at the three of them, Sukina spreading her arms out in front of Grey and Ichirou as they were forced to back up against a slab of stone. The kishin advanced, then stopped and put one foot back. It was going to make this as painful as possible for Sukina. She was going to be stabbed through the heart, the gut, anything that would bleed. She braced herself and closed her eyes as the sword kishin charged, brandishing its large metal claws that may as well have been swords. It reached its target and flesh met metal. Blood spurted and gushed onto the ground, splattering and dripping red onto the dirt. The sound of muscle and bone being crushed all at once by that fatal hit was bloodcurdling, but Sukina felt no pain. She opened her eyes and looked down. Her chest, stomach, torso, it was all completely fine. No gash, no blood, no nothing. Ichirou and Grey were both perfectly unharmed, still behind her. She looked up, confused, and almost fell down. Toku stood in front of his wife and children, with the kishin's claws stabbed through his chest. His blood splattered the ground. His bone and muscle was being crushed. His flesh had met metal. Sukina’s eyes were wide with shock, surprise, fear, and almost every negative emotion save rage. Tears immediately started pouring down her cheeks. She stood there, frozen but shaking, unable to accept what had just happened. Toku turned to her and reminded her, stuttering, that he'd promised to protect her, right before he crumpled to the ground.
All of Sukina's emotions mixed into one within her mind, and somewhere, buried deep behind what slivers of madness remained in her soul, something snapped. She let go of all her power with a piercing scream, sending out a blast that rocketed across the entire world and obliterated every kishin, crushing them into dust that blew away in the wind. The black that covered the globe faded to the pale blue of the sky or the dark blanket of a starry night, and everything was as it was a month before. The blast finished, and Sukina felt her eyes roll into the back of her head as she fell to her knees, grasping at her hair and trying to calm the migraine beginning to pound in her head. Grey and Ichirou slowly helped her sit up, but it wasn't long before Sukina remembered why she'd broken. She crawled over to Toku as best she could with her remaining strength (and some assistance from the twins), pleading internally that he hadn't bled out yet. She tried to fight back the tears pouring down her cheeks, but gave up and tried to focus on scraping any last bit of healing magic together, if there was any. She wasn't having any luck; she was shaking, biting her lips and tongue, and grunting with the pain of trying to muster any energy after she'd spent it all. Toku managed to lift his hands up on top of hers before she burst, and a small, thin smile spread across his lips. He asked her not to cry, shakily wiping some tears from her face with his bloody hand. Sukina didn't care. She held his hands tightly, leaning against his chest and sobbing nonetheless. He looked at her one last time and made her promise to take care of the kids, to which she nodded, managing to stifle her tears for a moment as Toku murmured his final words: "I love you...". Sukina watched the light fade from his eyes and felt the warmth begin to disappear from his hands, and everything was only confirmed as a pale blue soul appeared, hovering above his body. Sukina looked at it. She grabbed it, holding it in her hands and close to her chest. It burned her, because she was a Meister, but she didn’t care. Sukina let out a long, hard scream, broken up by sobs.
The rest of the group had survived, and eventually they all found what lay in waiting for them. Emily couldn't stand to look, and Sif couldn't take his eyes off of his friend's body. Death glanced back and forth, trying to stay strong for Emily. Afterwards, everything was rebuilt. Death City was back to normal, as was the rest of the world. Everything was peaceful. Sukina even went back to teaching classes at the DWMA. But she never smiled again. Not once after Toku died did her lips curl upwards. No amount of dissection or books, no matter what her kids or Emily did, nothing could make Sukina smile. She couldn’t use her magic, either. That giant wave took it all. It was all gone, it had been used up to save the world. Everyone’s except Toku’s. Sukina never forgave herself for letting him take the hit. She never forgot about how she couldn’t heal him. How she couldn’t help him. How she failed. How Toku died because of her. She soon became an alcoholic and a smoker to try and cope, despite urges against it by Emily, Sif, the twins, and others.

Two years or so later, once everything was restored, Sukina was teaching in her class one day. She displayed and went through the dissection of a small kishin with her students, and quickly grabbed the soul with her hand once the small kishin had died. She handed it out to one of her weapon students as a snack, and went to continue on with the lesson before something caught her eye: small golden sparkles healing the burn mark on her hand, from the kishin egg. Sukina didn't even wait two seconds, she yelled out that class was dismissed for the rest of the day and burst out the door, sprinting down the hallway and out the main entrance towards the cemetery. She rushed in, knowing by heart the way to her husband's tombstone. She ran down the paths, subtlety watching out for any roots or holes that might trip her. Finally, she arrived at the God-forsaken spot she visited so often. Sukina knelt down in the ground in front of the stone, shutting her eyes and attempting to muster any ounce of magic from her body. She was pleading, begging inside that she had some magic left. Such a small amount had appeared during her class, but she ignored all reason that that might've been all she had and kept trying. It had been 10 minutes. Nothing. Sukina looked back up at the tombstone. Tears brimmed at the edges of her eyes and let loose, slowly falling down her cheeks and dropping off her chin onto the cold, dry ground. She shut them closed and sobbed into her hands, her entire face covered by them. She cried out in anger, furious and heartbroken at her failure once again. "No..." she murmured, muffled by her hands. "I thought I could bring you back! I thought you could finally come home..." she trailed off, choking on her words as sobs continued to escape from the back of her throat. Silence lay thick in the air, like a blanket.
"Baby, why are you crying? Everything's okay now." Sukina's head shot up. There, standing in front of her, was Toku. Golden sparkles lit up the area around them, glowing like tiny stars at night time, like glitter thrown all over the place, like millions and millions of small suns illuminating the shadows. Sukina couldn't believe her teary eyes. He was really there, dressed exactly as the day she'd lost him, tears in the clothes all still present. There was no blood, no scars, only his warm smile and soft green eyes, all looking down at his wife. He reached out his hand and began stroking Sukina's hair, moving his other to her shoulder. Sukina couldn't help herself. She let loose happy tears and leapt up, wrapping her arms around Toku and squeezing him tight. His eyes widened for a second, but he smiled and hugged her back. "I-I can't b-believe it," Sukina stuttered as she ran her fingers through her husband's dark blue hair. "Y-you're really here..."
"Mm-hmm. And I'm not ever leaving you again, baby."

The twins came back from a mission that day to find the biggest surprise of their life, although thankfully it was a happy one. Life was back on track, and happy started to become the norm again. Toku helped Sukina break her alcoholism and smoking habits, and they spent every moment together that they could. Sometimes they went out, but they mostly stayed at home. Eventually, Sukina came out and announced she was pregnant again, and not too long after, Kainan Nakatsukasa was born.

Nat (Thanatos) Thompson

[ Rival ]
Nat was Emily's first partner (in an unsuccessful partnership), and so, naturally, some tension surfaced once Sukina connected with her after a day. He always had an off feeling about Sukina, although they didn't interact with each other at all besides when everyone hung out together, and during class and missions. He always had suspicions that she was hiding something, and they only grew over the course of her time in school. She was out the day after a strange soul wavelength had been sensed in the city. She was out the day after Emily's mother was found dead the night before. Her eyes resembled those of a snake's, and the appearance of her soul seemed to flicker whenever he sensed it, like the blue that he saw wasn't the entire picture. His suspicions were confirmed after three years, when Stein came forward with the truth after Sukina had given in to the madness. After that, his absolute focus was killing her and getting revenge for Emily's mother, as well as purging the academy and the world of another powerful witch that could lead it to chaos.

During the conflict between the witches and the DWMA, Nat came very close to killing Sukina several times. At the bombing of the DWMA, he challenged her, infuriating her and instigating a brawl between the two. During this, most of Sukina's full power was revealed to the students of the academy: not only her physical abilities like her agility, strength, reaction time, and speed, but her magical abilities as a witch. The fight was ended before Nat could strike an injuring blow, with Toku "accidentally" transforming out of his weapon form and causing both of the boys to fall back. Sukina took her chance and left, exploding the ground right where Nat had been to leave a message. The notion worked too well, and he became even more determined to take her head. He'd soon get another chance, but not before Sukina wanted to enforce that she was stronger than him. She knew he wanted to kill her, and so, to taunt him even further and simultaneously instill some fear in the students of the DWMA, she kidnapped him and took him as her prisoner. This incited the final battle, but much went on before the DWMA could rally their forces to launch a counterattack. Sukina tortured Nat with her magic and beat him relentlessly, but not enough to kill him. She received sadistic pleasure from watching him bleed, and attempted to warp his mind to turn him to insanity as he began to feel delirious from blood loss. Just as she came close, the meisters and weapons of the DWMA attacked, and her attention was diverted elsewhere. She struck one last blow on Nat in hopes of doing some decent damage, perhaps to kill him, and dashed off of her commanding rooftop into the fray that had begun to spread on the ground below. After being reunited with Toku (and a lot of bandages), he headed back out immediately, despite the concerns of both Emily, Stein, and Toku, too. He was determined to find Sukina and kill her, but Toku managed to distract him with other witches until the very end. He'd cornered Sukina, she was heavily wounded and not strong enough to fight back. Nat raised Toku's blade and prepared to bring it down on her, but Toku transformed out of his weapon form in time. He begged Nat not to hurt Sukina, crying and screaming. Nat was furious with Toku, and he forcefully transformed him back to a sword to finish what he'd started. He was going to kill Sukina and make her pay, whether she was a real witch or not, and he drowned out the sobs of his partner with those thoughts.

After Emily sacrificed herself for Sukina, Sukina restored her to life, Emily became a death scythe, the two girls graduated, and everything went back to normal, Nat had a hard time breaking out of the negativity he felt towards Sukina. She was in control of herself now and she had fixed what she'd done, but it took almost 10 years before she and Nat could consider each other friends. They made progress after she and Toku started dating, and Toku served as a middle man for helping them to get along. Eventually things mellowed out to friendly rivals, and Emily and Toku couldn't have been happier on the day that the two of them (very far into the future) worked together, as the most powerful meister and the new grim reaper, side by side with their weapons.

Franken Stein*

[ Father ]
Stein was the main parental figure in most of Sukina's life as a child, after her mother was killed for being found out as a witch. He always felt so guilty for keeping Sukina inside the house, but he told himself over and over again that it was for the best, that this was the only way to make sure she would be safe. He didn't want to risk losing her for something that wasn't her fault, she was young, and he could tell she would have potential as a Meister. He did his best to raise her and teach her when he could, alongside teaching at the DWMA. She mostly taught herself when she stayed inside the house, and Stein was often torn between feeling like he wasn't doing a good enough job or being proud of his daughter for doing so well on her own. When Sukina turned 15 and hadn't shown any signs of witch powers, he was almost happier than Sukina to see her going to school. She wouldn't be in danger, and she wouldn't be at risk. At least, so he thought. It wasn't long before Stein found out that she had lied to him, hiding what powers she'd discovered (as well as another side of herself) so she'd be able to go to school, and outside the house. He was frustrated, but she knew it wasn't fair to hold her back now. He worked on a serum to help her control her madness and still go about her life, but it wasn't enough to stop what was coming.

One night, Stein and Sukina went out together to run some errands. They made it through a few stores before Sukina got an uneasy feeling in her stomach, and excused herself to go outside. She began to stumble down the sidewalk towards an alley, and ducked inside it to lean against a wall near a trash can. The uneasy feeling traveled to her head, and Sukina suddenly understood what was going on. She stood up and struggled to fight it as long as she could, accidentally dropping her lab coat and kicking it by the trash can. The madness took over, and ended up taking Emily's mother, Maka Evans' life. Sukina regained control as the light faded from Maka's eyes, and screamed at the sight of what she'd done. She backed up against a wall and melted into the shadows on accident, but traveled to the roof of the building and stayed there until everyone who had come had left, except her father. In the commotion, Stein had forgotten about Sukina, so he immediately began to look around. His eyes stopped when he saw Sukina's coat, hidden and lodged behind a trash can by the wind. He picked it up and dusted it off, just as everything clicked in his mind. A wave of shock and horror washed over him, realizing that Sukina had been the one to kill Maka. He called out to his daughter and waited for any response. A few minutes later, Sukina walked out of the shadows at the bottom of the building, shaky and unsteady. She was hesitant to come near him, and begged him not to come close to her. Stein didn't listen, and it broke his heart as more and more fear shone in Sukina's eyes with each step he took. He grit his teeth and wrapped his arms around her, holding her close despite her struggles to get away. With regret, he was forced to knock her out and carry her home.

The secret of that night managed to stay under wraps for a couple years, until Sukina was completely overtaken by her other side. Stein was asleep when Emily began pounding on his door, a sobbing mess. He saw her face and knew something was wrong, but his heart dropped as she told him that Sukina had given in to the madness. The following day and each day after that was no better. Stein forced himself to confess everything-- Medusa, their plan, Sukina, and the entire situation surrounding the madness and the death of Maka. He couldn't bring himself to vote for the academy to deal with her the way they dealt with witches, but he couldn't hold his composure enough to defend her. The vote passed. He felt his heart breaking as each hour of what seemed like hell to tick by. It wasn't long before he saw Sukina again, though. She and the witches led an attack on the DWMA only a week after she took control of the group, flying in out of nowhere and bombing the building while students and faculty were still inside. Stein knew as soon as the building shook what it was. He didn't waste any time making sure the students evacuated, but stayed in the classroom until everyone was out. He ran down the hallways with Death, Emily, Sif, Loki, Nat, and Toku, and stopped outside among the rest of the school, all huddled together on the steps. He watched as Nat charged and tried to attack Sukina with Toku in his weapon forms, but he didn't manage to land any real hits on her due to Toku transforming out "on accident" right before he got close. The DWMA was in ruins, but it was only a few days before the witches struck again, kidnapping Nat to pay for his attack on Sukina during the bombing. And so the final battle began.

Stein arrived with Sif, Loki, Toku, and Emily at the witches' base with the entirety of the DWMA, rescuing Nat before heading into battle. Stein and Emily were partners in Sukina's absence, since he was able to connect with anyone by adjusting his soul wavelength. They faced off against Sukina a few times as things went on, faring decently against her magic and shadows, until they discovered she could now use Soul Force. She landed a critical hit on Stein, knocking him back and forcing him to cough up blood. He fought the pain and got back up as quick as he could, charging at Sukina and trying to land a hit with the end of Emily's lance. He decided to fight fire with fire, and once he got an opening he rushed forward and used Soul Force as he pressed his free hand across Sukina's forehead, sending her back against the ground. She played dead and fooled him for a moment, but they got right back up and back to fighting. They kept at it, back and forth with dodges and attacks until Nat intervened, throwing Toku through the air in his shuriken mode and gashing Sukina's cheek. Stein took the chance and knocked Sukina back, right before Nat rushed in to take his place fighting against her. He beat her down and forced Toku to transform, preparing to bring it down on her. Stein froze in his spot, unable to look away from what was going to be the end of his daughter. He didn't even notice Emily sneaking past him, running towards Nat and Toku, and jumping in front of Sukina to take the blow. Seeing this allowed Sukina the strength to break out from within, and to destroy the evil inside her. She regained control of her body and accidentally revived Emily, discovering her new, stronger powers that did not stem from darkness. Stein was overjoyed to see her back, and had never felt happier.

Medusa Gorgon*

[ Mother ]
Medusa is Sukina's mother by birth, along with Stein being her father. Medusa stayed with Sukina for most of her childhood, not leaving the house to go into the city at all, and very rarely leaving the house at all. She taught Sukina a good portion of mathematics, some chemistry, and especially some history and literature (since she is kind of old, being a witch), while Stein taught her biology, other sciences, some literature, and some mathematics. She never got around to teaching Sukina about her magic, because it hadn't developed before she was handed her untimely death by the hands of Maka and Soul Evans. After she returns from the dead, she teaches Sukina more about her powers and magic, and how to handle it best.
Sukina didn't have any real interaction with her actual mother when the snake was inside her, only with the dark remnants of what her mother used to be. Sukina was fooled by the snake many times because she kept mistaking it for her real mother, and when Medusa returned they talked about this to each other a lot to try and alleviate any bad stigma before trying to bond again as mother and daughter. This helped them both out a lot, and built the bridge for when Sukina and her father introduced the idea of having Medusa work with the academy to track down troublesome witches. The idea went through, and Stein eventually joined Medusa in that after he retired from teaching at the DWMA.

Sif Mjolnïr

[ Friend ]
Sif first met Sukina when they were very little (about 4 or 5), after his mother, Marie, decided to bring him along for a Death Scythe meeting in America. Sif lived and was growing up in Australia, so he hadn't ever been to the states before, but he had a nice time with Sukina the first time they met. They mostly talked about how things were different where they lived, but they played some games together as well. They kept this up each time there was a meeting, adding Sif's sister Loki in on the fun once she was old enough (and once Marie was forced to start bringing her, since she went through a divorce and had no one to watch her while she and Sif were away). But one day, Sif stopped seeing Sukina at the meetings. She stopping coming. He always wondered why, and no one would tell him any answers. He missed her, and he hoped to see her again one day. He'd get his wish.
Sif and Loki moved to the states to go to school at the DWMA when they were in their early teens, a year or so after Sukina began coming to school. They were all overjoyed to see each other, and went on a few missions together with Emily, Nat, and Toku to help their hunt for corrupted souls. Unfortunately, contact with Sukina outside of class began to grow less frequent, until finally the big incident happened and Sukina was declared an enemy of the school. Sif didn't want to believe what they were all telling him, he didn't and couldn't see Sukina as how they described her. He sided with Emily and defended Sukina as best he could, until the bombing. Everything they'd said was staring him right in the face. Insane, cruel, evil. But he knew that that wasn't the real Sukina. He knew it wasn't her. He felt her trying to fight the darkness, and he held on tight to his faith that everything would turn out okay.
Everything did turn out okay after the final battle, with Emily alive and healed and Sukina returned to normal. Life carried on, and things were good. Sif eventually became a Death Scythe at 23, and helped out at the academy when he could. He was moved to a position in New York City at 28, soon after Sukina and Toku's wedding, and at 29 he offered to take Toku's Death Scythe station in Oceania and give him his current spot in New York so he could at least be closer to home, but Toku politely declined. A couple years after, he was moved back to Death City, and found himself doing babysitting for the twins quite a lot (he didn't mind, he loved babysitting for the twins).

Anthony Stein

[ Younger Brother ]
Before Medusa was killed, she hadn't mentioned to anyone quite yet that she was pregnant with another child. Once she was restored to life, so was the unborn child. This was quite the bit of news to Stein and Sukina, but they were both very excited. Sukina soon received a new little brother and Stein soon received a son. Sukina came over to the house and visited Anthony a lot, as well as doing babysitting there or bringing him to her and Emily's house when her parents had to go away on missions for the academy. Emily was very fond of Anthony, and he was very fond of her. Anthony ended up becoming a meister, and as fate would have it he got put in Sukina's class after she started teaching at the academy.

Ichirou Nakatsukasa

[ Son, Grey's twin ]
Ichirou was the firstborn of the twins, born on May 29th. He was a very quiet baby, and preferred to stay close to his mother, often sitting in her lap and sleeping as she worked on plans for her class, graded papers, or something else of the sort.. He looked very similar to her, and at one point drew stitches (or something that was supposed to resemble stitches, anyway) on himself to look more like her. As he grew up he tended to spend an equal amount of time with both parents, but mostly with Sukina. They would read a lot together, and do some dissection together on occasion (this became more frequent as Ichirou got older). Ichirou discovered his first weapon form at age 10, and found out about his 4 other forms soon after. After that, he started spending a bit more time with his father to practice weapon techniques, tips, and tricks, but he continued to take slightly more after his mother. He did, however, gain Toku's height, sense of humor, and physical figure.

Grey Nakatsukasa

[ Daughter, Ichirou's twin ]
Grey was the second born of the twins, born on May 29th. She was a very giggly baby, often getting into trouble and trying to eat everything she could get her hands on. While Sukina was still on maternity leave, she probably spent most of her time making sure Grey didn't eat things she wasn't supposed to. Growing up, she ended up spending more time with her father, and took after his personality and mannerisms. Grey did become pretty handy with knives and scalpels though, and eventually learned how to use Soul Force as a Meister.

Kainan Nakatsukasa

[ Youngest Son ]
After Sukina brought Toku back to life, they spent a lot of time together to make up for the two years they'd lost when Toku had been dead. Sometimes they went out into the city or other places, but a lot of of it was spent at home. Some of this was watching movies, some was cooking or baking, some was cuddling, and some (a lot) was a bit more than cuddling. About a year after Toku had come back, Sukina announced that she was pregnant again, this time with one little boy. Kainan was born on December 28th, but with a deformity of his right leg where from the knee down hadn't developed during Sukina's pregnancy. Sukina and the rest of the family are as supportive as they can be, which sometimes includes Sukina sending death glares at rude people (should the need ever arise). She loves her son very much, and is very proud to watch him grow up into an excellent weapon (who becomes a Death Scythe rather early, at 18).
