She is a result of Loki's failed attempt to resurrect his wife after Synotra manages to murder Sigyn before he could reach her. Verðlaus is a complex organism created from a mix of dark magic, fierce emotion, and fragments of Sigyn's soul, inadvertently becoming the physical manifestation of both Loki's hatred for Synotra and his grief and sorrow for the loss of his partner.

Horrified by his creation's resemblance to Sigyn and unable to come to terms with or even understand what he had accidentally brought to life, he fled the scene, leaving both Sigyn's body and the new creature. Abandoned on the battlefield, Verðlaus had to adapt quickly to life on her own and learn how to survive.

Unbenownst to Loki, in his desperate attempt to revive Sigyn he had delved deeper into a realm of even more corrupt magic that the world had never seen. He unleashed a new form of darkness, a sentient powerful force that has named itself "Etir". Verðlaus is imbued with this power, and it torments her constantly, desiring to spread across the continent, overtake light and pervert any pure magic and magic-users that exist.

Being the only one to ever experience this new power, it's extremely overwhelming and unpredictable and is constantly fighting against Verðlaus' own consciousness in an attempt to take over.

The black markings near her eyes and over her body are from when Etir has leaked out.
