  • To fulfill his duties, he became skilled at slipping into roles and acting them out as if they're his real persona. Even for him, it's sometimes hard to tell them apart from his real self.
  • Certainly a bright and attentive person, but also very adventurous and risk loving.
  • Came to enjoy worldly pleasures a little too much, the more he had to indulge in them to fulfill a status quo.
Past

To understand how Neir came to stand in the place he eventually did, some of the Turgalite's history must be told. On the planet that the Turgalite called home, they have lived in constant conflict with another species that was their equal in many ways. For centuries, the two sides would clash occasionally, though managed to coexist in relative peace. That changed when the populations rose to drastic numbers at an exhilarating rate, marking a start for the race for unused resources and unclaimed land. Conflicts became harder and harder to avoid because the two species could not come to an understanding with each other - and finally, their world was plunged into a Great War.

As it happened, the Turgalite received unexpected help, which with they managed to obliterate their enemies. In gratitude, but also in fear of what would happen if they refused cooperation with the far more powerful Imperata, the Turgalite agreed to rebuild their societies according to these foreigners' conditions. Slowly, they were integrated into a new kind of empire as 'privileged' citizens. The term betrayed the fact that despite living in peace and prosperity, any criticism against the Imperata and their ruling would mean death, or worse. To ensure that the majority of Turgalite would continue to support their foreign overlords, individuals of their own kind would be - under the pretense that it's a completely democratic process - elected as leaders and political representatives. Those of course would propagate for the ones that actually put them in place of power, and act as their eyes and ears.

Neir was groomed to fit a political role, though it wasn't so much his potential than the circumstances of his birth. His ancestors belonged to the first to cooperate with the Imperata and it's even gone so far that their political relationship were deepened by marriages. The Phrinus family profited from the arrangement, as they stayed in positions of apparent power for many generations and Neir was to carry on the tradition. Fortunately for the young Turgalit, he possessed a sharp mind. He was aware how limited his options were and he quickly learned that he had to be ruthless to survive. By observing and analyzing the tactics of his successful predecessors, he fought his way to the place that would grant him the greatest freedom.

Through his efforts, he earned the trust and recognition of his superiors, reflected in the position he was given. But his freedom came with a price - he sacrificed his ideals, ruined the lives of many, and closed off his own heart. From time to time, the devastation over the things he'd lost and done would come back to haunt him, but he gradually learned to keep them at bay with various forms of distraction.
