during an attempt to rob a train he was knocked off of the engine by the sheriff, the two were both knocked off in the middle of nowhere. the sheriff cuffed them together determined to bring him in. but through the trials of crossing the desert while chained together eventually getting past their of differences of being on different sides of the law and even falling for each other. the two are secretly boyfriends and cooper sets up fake emergency's just to see his sheriff again. his frequent attempts to see him have lead to cooper completely slacking off on actual crimes and he has since lost his reputation as a serious threat in the desert that he lives in.
