Veles

immortal . male . bi

King of the undead, this Dainty was a necromancer who was gifted extraordinary talents from the god of Death. There was a cost to his new ability to effortlessly command the dead at will though: he is now soulless and unable to die--bound to haunt this earth with his army of the undead for all eternity. It's not as lonely as it seems though, at least the god of Death likes his company.

first whispers

Veles was born to an impoverished peasant family in the North of his kingdom, and when his parents died of illness when he was 12, he was left caring for his younger brother on his own. Though he was a resourceful child, he barely kept the two of them alive, and once he was old enough, he left home to work as a travelling mercenary. The money he made was sent back to his brother, and Veles quickly garnered a reputation as both ruthless and talented. Legend had it that he would do anything for the right price.

By age 21, Veles was something of a hero figure, though not necessarily one that was loved by his people. Despite his relative fame, he kept largely to himself, and rarely traveled home, fearing that his presence would endanger the peaceful life his brother had built in their hometown.

Rotting Soul

Isolated from a very young age by poverty, and now by his own reputation, Veles found himself jaded and world-weary. He never settled in one place, finding himself unable to feel secure or at home anywhere. This sense of detachment, in combination with crushing loneliness, eventually led Veles down a rather dark path. He grew interested in necromancy and blood magic, which further alienated him from his people. There were those who gravitated towards Veles' new power, though--a group of religious fanatics who had been researching necromancy. Though their relationship with Veles was largely obsessive and at times objectifying, seeing him more as a weapon than a leader, Veles himself was so desperate for any sense of belonging that it took very little to indoctrinate him into their growing movement.

The people of Veles' kingdom rejected this new faith.  Finding himself with no one else to turn to, Veles grew very attached to his followers, though in reality he was subservient to them. A lonely, insecure boy was all too easy to manipulate.

Eternal sleep

Veles, by age 26, was the most powerful necromancer recorded at the time. His seemingly endlessly increasing power drew the attention of the Death God, Athanasius, who had long been wary of the cult forming around Veles. While Athanasius was a generally peaceful entity, he was also very protective of his realm, and the threat of a young mortal with powers approaching godhood was too great to ignore. Athanasius sent his servant, the guard of the underworld, to kill Veles.

The battle between the Gatekeeper and Veles was a violent one. Veles was, ultimately, the victor, but not without sustaining grievous wounds to himself. Athanasius, in an effort to keep tabs on Veles, chose to grant him a new form, healing the irreparable wounds and reshaping them. It is this altered body which Veles still occupies, and now serves as the new guard of the underworld. He has been Athanasius' most faithful servant ever since.

Yinei
???

Veles rarely willingly enters the mortal realm, but he has been recently summoned by a young mage named Yinei. Veles remains unsure of his motives, but he does find Yinei amusing, and has opted to remain at his side for the time being.

Tabbris
Rival

While Veles is a naturally gifted necromancer, as well as being graced with a portion of Athanasius' power, he is matched in both rank and talent by Tabbris, a young demigod born to the god of Light, Calix. Veles resents Tabbris for being born with gifts which he had had to spend years of his life honing. Though Calix is a relatively young God, he is also extremely powerful, and more influential than Athanasius or his siblings. As such, Tabbris, while mortal, is generally seen as equal to Veles in rank, which further complicates their relationship.

Athanasius
Mentor

Though Athanasius would later choose to leave his post to live in a human form on Earth, he spent hundreds of years at Veles' side. During their time together, the two grew fond of each other, though due to Veles' generally solitary nature, they were not often in the same place at the same time.
