before the fall

Ronnie grew up in a well-off family, afforded many privileges throughout her life. She got the whole gamut: a large house, private schools, and a full ride to an Ivy League school for a major in [fuck what]. From there she coasted into the American Dream; she got her own wife and house, and after a relatively smooth adventure through the adoption process, their own baby. Things were perfect for a good while.
At five years old, their son passed in a tragic accident, and the grief they suffered was devastating. Where her wife withdrew, nearly catatonic with grief, Ronnie threw herself into her work, keeping herself distracted to avoid drowning in the hurt. This distancing was misunderstood as ignoring what happened and trying to forget their son, silently driving a rift between the couple until it was too late to save the marriage. The split was mutual, but not at all amicable.
The years following the divorce were some of the worst of her life. The grief and heartbreak pushed her to rock bottom, drinking to the point where she was rarely ever sober and squandered a good chunk of her fortune on gambling just to evoke some kind of feeling. As if this wasn't enough, she had to deal with her parents hounding her to try and mend things with her ex. An intervention by a few friends got her off her bender, and was lucky enough to find a comfy desk job to keep her going.

present day

Ronnie got a few years of peace before the Hellbeast threat made itself known. While her parents were making sure she knew that her ex-wife was fleeing to the Northeast coast, she decided on a whim to try and make her life worth something by heading to the newly-built base of K-Sec South, offering herself up as a pilot for the experimental organisms known as Nephilim. There she built a name for herself, her quick wits and knack for strategy finding her successful, or at least alive, at the end of each fight she entered. She soared through the ranks, finding herself comfortable at the current director's second-in-command when he fell to an unexpected attack on the base.
In her three years as head of the combat department and overall director of the base, she's whipped the fledgling army into shape. While she no longer pilots Nephs herself, the strategy she lends combatants has caused mortality rates of pilots to fall by a not insignificant amount. In addition, she's devoted more funding and energy into the scientific field, aiming to understand what makes the Hellbeasts tick instead of just destroying them on sight.
