A celestial body born from a fragment of a dead primordial god-like entity called a World Eater. There were others who were also born from the World Eater's fragments and, later on after much observation over the vast new worlds they presided over, they entertained the concept of a "family" and would refer to each other as "siblings". Selena herself was especially close to her sister, Hectate, who came into being at the same time as Selena, and they were also each other's very first sight to see when they opened their eyes for the first time.

Selena mainly watches over the Middle and Upper Realms where the stars and the moon can be seen across the night sky. What the inhabitants of those realms see are Selena's starry hair and her lone, pupil-less eye keeping a watchful eye on those tiny mortals. Because of this, Selena has been called the Moon Goddess.
