Zhao Shen is well known for his strictness and cold persona. He used to possesses an extremely black-and-white sense of morality,however, He changed his point of view when he killed ‘heavens calamity’ for the sole reason that he was a ghost. Later, when he realized not everthing was as black and white as he thought, he found out that 'heavens calamity' had gone missing.(when you kill a ghost as long as their strong enough, they'll survive, the only way to kill them is to scatter their ashes)

He is charismatic and intelligent, with a nonchalant attitude. He appears to care little for others and to only act in his own best interest. However, to Meng-er he is very gentle. He is arrogant, though rightfully so, as he is one of the most powerful cultivators in the Daxue sect. Despite this, he has a more vulnerable side. Although Zhao Shen rarely opened up to others, he was rather protective towards those he cared about. In fact, one of the deepest regrets of his life was watching his friend’s demise after being killed by a beast during a night hunt. Notably, Zhao Shen still respected those who disagreed with him if they demonstrated integrity.
