Soul VanBelle is the heiress to a large and well-established witch's coven, but she doesn't want to get the title just because she just so happened to be born the daughter of the current leader. Soul works hard each day to earn her spot, whether it be in the hearts of her sister witches or in the eyes of her superiors. She's someone with a strong "hard work pays off" philosophy and she believes anyone can do anything if they just put their mind to it. Soul has many trained talents and skills in things such as martial arts, spell casting, cartomancy and other such pursuits. She also prides herself on her feminine appeal. She puts a lot of work into her appearance, and doesn't feel that embracing her femininity makes her weak or impractical. Soul believes that these two sides of herself can operate together harmoniously, rather than having to choose one or the other.
Soul is under a lot of pressure, but she won't show that to anyone around her. She enjoys being perceived as the "strong one" even if, sometimes, she needs a hand- this leading her to refuse help from others out of stubbornness, even when she could really benefit from it. She spends almost all of her free time studying or dealing with internal affairs within the coven, leaving her with very little breathing room. Soul feels like every second of her day is occupied with something or another, but that all of it is important and that she must attend to all of it with her fullest attention. Even when others aren't pressuring her, Soul won't allow herself any breaks, believing that she doesn't need them because of her strength of character. Learning when to take some time for herself is a skill Soul has yet to develop.
That being said, she does have a couple of friends who help her tap into the part of herself who wants to live a normal, happy life. She hangs out with Valentine Annesly and Lori Bickmore often- two members of the coven who also happen to be normal girls living in the normal world, and they bring her down to earth when she's feeling too stressed to function and remind her that everyone is human. Soul loves them like her own family, and wouldn't give up on hanging out with them- whether it be shopping, eating take-out or watching bad movies- for the world.
Overall, Soul is working hard to earn her place as the head of the coven. She wants to run things better than they've ever been done before, to promote more equality, more humaneness and more kindness, to find the sense of family that originated with the coven, but that has been almost lost in recent years. She's unaware of the dark deeds committed by her mother, but even still, she's determined to do things right this time around when things are under her control, but until then she is working hard to get there. She is strong, beautiful and feminine, but she is also delicate and often very stressed and tired. Sooner or later she will discover that even she needs moments of rest.
