Hugo

"If misery loves company, then why am I alone?"

Hugo Molchalin was a college student from Russia. He was a strange mix of delinquent and intellectual, trespassing and taking drugs at a young age, all the while bringing books so he could study for an exam while he committed petty crimes. He came to America as a transfer student for what was supposed to be only 4 months. He ended up being stranded there with a few of his friends after the infection rolled in and borders were closed. They never reopened and Hugo found himself to be abandoned as a half-plant zombie in a country whose language he was barely conversational in. That coupled with intense isolation, horrid treatment from other survivors, and his affliction has left him a trigger happy and untrusting shell of his former self.  

Hugo used to be a good student. He loved reading and learning, even with his small rebellious streak. He had good grades and he would take the weekend to graffiti with his best friend Ivan. Time changes things, and trauma even more. Isolation, physical trauma, insomnia, malnutrition, and the constant feral hunt of the hordes that chase him forced Hugo to pay a toll he couldn't afford. Hugo no longer trusts anyone, especially those who were not cured. He is a bit trigger happy and is more likely to shoot a person approaching him than talk to them. He expects any act of kindness to end with a knife in his back.

The infection didn't help with this. He swears he can hear the plants talking to him and the things he is "told" makes him regret being cured. When under stress, Hugo can act almost feral. He has torn man's throat out with his own teeth, and he will do it again. He is driven by the animalistic instinct to try and outrun death, no matter how impossible that is, and will often neglect food or sleep for weeks at a time when spurred on by this instinct.

Ivan was a childhood friend of Hugo, and they had a mutual but secret crush on each other, after Hugo was infected, however, Ivan was the first one to pull the gun on Hugo. He didn't pull the trigger and even agreed to wait a few weeks to see if the infection stuck. When it did, Hugo left, only to be stopped by a pistol against his head and his best friend offering him "mercy."

Highschool acquaintance. Barely even a friend when the group left Russia. She and Hugo dated for less than a week when they were younger. Hugo sacrificed himself for her, but, after he was infected, she pushed hard for Ivan to just kill him. While Ivan pointed the gun, Hugo never had any doubt who was really behind the trigger.
