He’s got a bit of an ego on him. Actually, a lot of an ego. He knows Kanewaka (known later as Takahira) was highly considered and thinks it’s his job to live up to that reputation, thinking of himself as Kanewaka’s representative in the citadel. That said, his ego causes him to be a bit of a snob in response to swords from… shall we say, lower backgrounds. However, he’s one of those people who has to be doing something with himself at all times, so he’s happy to take on nearly any tasks. It causes a bit of cognitive dissonance for some, considering his attitude toward “lesser” swords, but to him it makes perfect sense. (Don’t make him cook though; not only has he made an enemy in the kitchen, he can’t cook to save his life.) However, a couple of unfortunate facts about his history can lead to reckless behavior in battle and taking on tasks he’s not equipped to perform. These issues also lead to more intense distaste for those swords from “lower” backgrounds, since they were used by notable people and recorded in history.

If there's one hard-working toudan in the Citadel, it's him. He will work hard no matter what the task. He's particularly focused with training, practicing every day even when he hasn't been assigned training as his task for the day. His hard work always pays off quickly, too; he's good at finding the most efficient way of doing things, whether it makes the people he's working with angry or not. Even if he cared more about their opinions, their anger wouldn't scare him; very little that he experiences in the flesh scares him. These traits make him a great party leader when sent to battle; then again, even if he wasn't placed as leader he might well take over anyway.

There's no way around it: he does not care what others think. It's his way or the highway, and he'll plow right through anyone who doesn't agree with him. He doesn't care whose feelings he hurts, and he's not willing to do anything about those feelings; he'll tell you outright that he's not a feelings person and that "that sort of bullshit" ought to be left to someone else. He can also be a horrendous snob toward swords whose smiths were lower-class or not as highly considered; this is probably because all he has to hold onto is his smith's name and he hates that everyone else there can boast of having famous masters.
