Story
[Still a WIP]
Augutus had a rather ordinary childhood. His parents separated when he was too young to notice and he lived with his mother. He always knew that he was loved and quite frankly never understood or appreciated other people’s input of how sad it must be to not have ‘a strong male role model’ in his life. Augie was the man of the house and it wasn’t as though his mother was ever going to leave him to struggle. She was perfectly capable of teaching him how to shave, change a tyre and talk to girls and he never hesitated in letting people know.
He did reasonably well in school. Applying himself enough when he felt it was important. He did a few afterschool sports preferring those that didn’t involve a team. It wasn’t that he was a bad team player but rather he felt it unfair that his success should hinge on others ability. He felt that if he had done well he should succeed and if he had done poorly he should fail. How could one develop with others covering for their shortcomings?
Highschool would come and he would have a growth spurt shooting him to the top of the social food chain. Suddenly tall, handsome and with many admirers Augie would thrive. He never really felt the need for teenage rebellion finding that his mother could be talked to in regards to rules. Rules were never set without reason and if a strong enough argument was provided, they could be amended. It was also during these years that he would start to worry about his image. It wasn’t so much about peer pressure as being top dog meant he didn’t have to conform but he would begin to think that being more grown up would make him even more untouchable. He’d start crafting an image for himself as a man rather than a boy. Lying about little things he thought mattered like his favourite food, movies, books etc. And in the context of high school it worked. The girls swooned over him telling them his ideal date was a candlelit dinner in a French restaurant followed by a carriage ride through the park, rather than a movie and burger like the other boys. They were little white lies and he was careful to know what he was talking about lest he back himself into a corner. He never claimed to like escargot but he did enjoy crème caramel so French food was valid and he didn’t feel strongly against carriage rides so what was the harm in promoting them, justifications like that.
Naturally once high school ended there was less of a definitive social structure and Augustus needed the adoration less, content to keep to himself. While at TAFE he would make friends but it was a different kind of scene not seeing each other every day or being surrounded by the same people. He would grow a little more comfortable in his own skin. If asked he would still default to what he considered to be more respectable grown up answers but more out of habit than fear of not being taken seriously. It was also during these years he would be introduced to his future best friend, Jonathan, through mutual freinds. While he would immediately be able to tell the difference in status between himself and the other boy he was never one to back down. Augie would look for ways to push his buttons and tease him about being a 'trustfund baby' but eventually they would settle in each other's company finding more in common that expected. He delights in dragging Jonathan off to do 'normal person' things that he feels he wouldn't have done like bowling, eating at diners or going to a carnival. In turn Jonathan will insists on dressing Augustus up and taking him to restaurants or the theatre. They have fun together and it's probably only the fact they chose to study very different fields that stops them from regarding one another as rivals.
While studying he would take on the evening job of a topless waiter to help cover his tuition and boost his savings. He figured it played to his strong suits and paid better than the local fast food joints. The club in question was 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang' or K2B2 as it was more often referred to by the locals. Even upon graduating and taking up a proper job as a landcape gardener he would continue to work the club having made some friends there and enjoying the extra cash.
