▮WORK AND HOME

na'nshati n'yguggothu

The shops of Cannery Row sit cozily together with the peeling paint, damp wood structures, and the slow decay that comes with being beachfront property. Among the alleys that extend via boardwalk over the surf is a shop that is smaller than most. The building is of an older design with a residency suite above the first floor, and has access to the water by a tie dock that threatens to sink into the bay at any moment. With its faded navy paint, dirty windows, and unmarked door it would be difficult to notice it was there. Even if it was not under enchantment. The only sign of occupancy is a bright blue candle that sits behind the one clean pane of glass on the upstairs windowsill. You can find the window lit Monday through Thursday from seven in the morning til dusk. Those are the hours the sea witch keeps.
If you are in the market for trinkets of enchantment, salves that instantly heal even the worst sunburn, or your tastes in potions is just a little too peculiar for your local alchemist then the door of Sailors Lost is open to you. The air inside of the narrow shop is heavy with the smell of lavender, brine, and something else not terribly inviting. Flowers and herbs hang in multicolored sheets against the wall behind the counter in varying states of stasis with only their tags catching the wind of the antique ceiling fan. The opposite wall is covered in box shelves cluttered with various doodads and trinkets stacked in haphazard piles, and delicate crystal formations locked behind glass. Further down the shop, the back hallway is curtained off by strings of shells and pearls.
Behind the curtain and up the stairs lives the cecaelia who owns this establishment. The flat on the second floor is sparsely furnished with only the leftovers of Goodwill and the best roadside offerings Monterey could provide. To the left, a broken bookshelf holds numerous potted plants that spill over in their desperation to reach what little light spills in from the filthy windows, and a floral print couch with broken feet sits in front of a bulky, dusty CRT TV that has not been been more than a magazine holder for quite a few years. To the right sits a wardrobe holding up piles of books stacked precariously towards the ceiling, and a large clawed bathtub with its enamel heavily damaged by saltwater. The tub serves as Water's bed, with a quilt of living kelp draped for the ready across the length of it. The kitchen is small with no stove or dishwasher and only a small rug with "Kiss the Cook!" embroidered in its center to proclaim where it begins and ends. The coffeemaker is always filled, and adds the only welcoming fragrance to the area. It is not the expected dwelling of a creature of the sea, but to Water it is home.

▮ MINUTIAE

  • Calypso is most comfortable land form includes having 3-8 tails. She can hold this form for days at a time before needing to return to her true form whereas she can only appear truly human for a single day at a time.
  • As a pureblood fae, Calli is very vulnerable to iron. Wounds inflicted by iron will never fully heal.
  • Calli has a pet sea otter named Wiffs who likes to collect tin cans.
  • Modern technology is endlessly entertaining to Calli. She will often barter her services for electronics.
  • Calli uses a wand made of yew and pearl as a focus object even though her blood is strong enough to use magic without it. She will not answer if asked about why she keeps it on her person.

▮ PROMPTS

How does Calypso relate to other faerie?
Calypso feels a strong, natural bond to fae connected to water, and enjoys their company the most. The further the fae is from that element, the more wary Calypso is of them. However, her nature does not allow her to be hostile to a stranger.

Well, then how about people who aren't faerie? What about humans?
Although she still holds a prejudice against mortal beings, Calypso has conceded the importance of integrating (in stealth) with the modern human world. Calypso is a social creature, and slips into a mortal identity quite naturally. Unless a human is already aware of beings outside of their world (or, through their own blood, apart of), Calypso is comfortable keeping up her facade indefinitely around them.

What is up with that third eye?
The eye on her forehead can see through glamours and illusions. However, opening it is akin to tearing apart her flesh and it will bleed out her magic and life profusely until it is closed. It is a powerful and costly trick reserved only for dire situations.

What setting does Calypso belong to?
Calypso is based loosely around the October Daye series, but can fit and interact in most any fantasy-modern setting. Characters who belong to a world where magic is not a secret or the norm will not fit with her setting.
