Summary

Born beneath the trinity tree's branches, Melia is a cat who was raised to be pious and proud of it. She was going to be a protector, she would care for the tree and the goddess as they cared for all of them. She would join the city guard, fight off the armies of decay on the goddess's behalf.

At least... that was the plan. Things change, though, and in Melia's case, the change brought with it a new father, and a new little sister whose heart didn't work quite right but was nonetheless set on seeing all the worlds could offer. And suddenly her priorities shifted; she would protect the goddess, yes, but she would also protect her sister. She had to protect little Virva from all the things that might harm her. What sort of person would she be if her little sister were to leave and get herself killed?

So when she realized that the girl had begun taking an... unusual interest in the lives of the great tree's visiting warriors, she had a feeling she knew what was coming. And when at last the fires stopped and the portals opened again, Melia followed after her sister.

It hurt to leave her world behind, but this was what she had to do.

The goddess might be gone from their lives, but Virva would be safe, so long as Melia stayed by her side.

Trivia

  • Melia was designed as a gacha cat for the Valley of Kings and Hunter's Woods summer event, Journey to the Trinity Tree. I actually received her shortly before winning Virva, and as soon as I noted the green tones her fur shared with Virva, I immediately started brainstorming connections between her and the other cat. Good thing I managed to win Virva, then!
  • Though Melia loves her sister dearly, the two really don't see eye to eye. They tend to fight quite a bit, due to Melia's concern for Virva's wellbeing presenting in rather overbearing ways, and their shared headstrong attitudes about who's really in the right makes it hard for them to compromise and see eye to eye.
  • Melia's name was originally going to be Finnish in origin, which she would have shared with Virva, but I ultimately settled on one from another European language family to highlight both the similarities and disconnect between the two. In addition to being a Greek name derived from μελία, meaning ash tree (in reference to her origin as a cat of the Trinity Tree), it is also used as a Georgian surname meaning fox, which ties the two together given the association of kitsune with will-o'-the-wisps.
