TLDR

The Soul Guard is an intergalactic organization that trains soldiers to travel between dimensions. Their goal is to prevent stars from burning out. After moving to Enyo from her home planet, she joins the Soul Guard and befriends Xinyi and Yukio. The planet gets destroyed, the trio find out they're angels, and an ancient celestial war resurfaces

BACKSTORY

Zena was born on the beachy planet of Elin-Lya, known for its beautiful emerald-green oceans and white sand. When she turned 5, her family moved to the neighboring planet Enyo. Some of the friends from her new town decided to join the Soul Guard together. Zena quickly excelled, and was eventually moved to Headquarters for full-time leadership training where she met Yukio and Xinyi. They became a trio almost immediately. 7 years later, at 18 years old, they graduate and begin missions

PLANET ARC

Soldiers are scouted based on the percentage of stardust in their blood, as high levels allow the person to travel between dimensions. The percentage is randomized and not genetic. During missions, Guards live pre-assigned lives in a different reality. Once they die in the alternate universe, their soul provides fuel for the stars (stars are shared between all realities). Zena is promoted to a team leader because of her exceptional leadership skills. She inherits the team that Yukio and XInyi are on, and the trio spends the next 7 years training and completing jobs. At the beginning of the main storyline, their planet, Enyo, is attacked by space tyrants while they are in a mission. Xinyi has to be pulled out of the assignment early, causing her mind to fracture between realities. Zena rallies her team to fight back, but the Admiral forces her soldiers to escape into space via spaceship

SPACE ARC

after the destruction, they try to find a soul guardian base in another solar system and process everything that's happened. during their travels, xinyi accidentally frees all of the angels from limbo. the historical context for this is as follows : angels are celestial beings that keep space matter in balance by protecting the stars. millions of years ago, following the first war of angels, an event called genesis wiped out the universe to reset it. all of the celestials were sent to limbo during the event. the lack of angels caused the stars to start dying at an exponential rate. none of this was known by the post-genesis universe. after the angels were freed, the trio is told that their human bodies must die to unlock their celestial form. they receive their powers, and the ancient war against the main villain (estelli) resumes. they begrudgingly join the war, exacting revenge against the space tyrants simultaneously. the end is all angsty / tragic
