Sebastian is a 17-year-old boy with insomnia; he often experiences sleep paralysis and sees a horrible creature in the corner of his room when he wakes up. This creature is a compilation of all of his fears and anxiety, most of which is related to anorexia. At the beginning of the story, Seb is plagued with these nightmares and he slowly begins to transform into his sleep paralysis monster.
He is currently in his world's equivalent of college. The age of admittance is a lot lower due to people having evolved to some level and the general population being more intelligent. He's a chemical engineer in training which helps him figure out how to destroy the lab-spawned parasite that is turning people into their nightmares/sleep paralysis monster
As it turns out, this is happening to many other people in the world; the monsters in the dreams are actually a form of parasitic life that feeds off of fear and strong emotions and eventually converts the host into one of them. Throughout the story, Seb has to deal with this new horrific form and find a way to stop the progression of others who are also transforming. In the end, he's able to rid the world of them, but he and the others that had been transformed for so long weren't able to revert back to their original body all the way. There are scars and disfigurations that hint back to their monstrous form, and some are able to even switch between their human and creature forms, including Seb.
