Una Aurora Valencia of the House of Raven

the King in your word made out of glass...

Summary

Una is the queen of Lyria and Rivia.

By 1267 she became a widow. Born under the House of Raven, she was a Lyrian princess when she married Reginald, the then king of Rivia, making her queen of both Lyria and Rivia, a powerful although small kingdom situated right under the kingdom of Aedirn. She has two sons named Villem and Anséis (The heir to the throne is Prince Villem) with her husband, but Reginald unfortunately died in 1259 after a long illness.

As her sons were still too young to rule, the council decided to let her rule, believing the grieving widow would be easy to control while enemies of the kingdom decided to try and pounce on them while they were weak. Instead, both were met with a forceful command, with her leading her army to victory after victory, despite having had no military training herself, and beheading those at home who tried to get in her way. Before the winter even arrived, all of her enemies had surrendered.

Personality

INTELLIGENT • CHARISMATIC • BRAVE

Una is a strong, level-headed leader. Usually she has to keep herself composed and somewhat serious, but occasionally her good humour can be seen.

She has rather a sardonic manner with those who annoy her, and doesn't suffer fools gladly...the sass is real.

As a mother, she also has strong nurturing instincts, which come into play if someone close to her is distressed or injured. She is also somewhat of a she-bear: Whichever god you serve save you if you anger her into defending her "cubs"

And it begins now, you hear that voice from the crowd. Finally, fear in your heart, that old stone. This is how it starts.
We've been waiting for it, oh, we've been begging for it. And it won't be long, until we'll be raising our voices in song.

Backstory

Una was born as one of a pair of twins, the other being male and stillborn. He was given the posthumous name Caillte. The existence of Caillte was kept a secret, as it was considered as an ill omen.

Una had to live up to being the "replacement" for the male heir. She spent a lot of time in Skellige, and still loves the mountainous scenery.

Being told that “your brother was taken to serve a higher purpose” or that “the gods took him” made Una grow up a little uncomfortable with religion. She accepts others and their beliefs, but personally doesn’t follow any gods. She would bunk church if she could get away with it.

Una spent her younger years (6-10) in the Isles of Skellige. The reason as to why that was, was due to severe political intrigue in Lyria. Una's parents were worried that she could get mixed up in that rather badly, especially so if the kingdoms stability was in question during those years. So Una was sent to her distant relatives in Skellige, the an Craite clan where the political nature was simple and no one there would have a reason to harm her. The man put to the task of being Una's guardian was the notorious Wild Boar of the Sea, otherwise known as Crach an Craite, whom at the time was only at the age of 24.

Crach was a broad shouldered man with a mop of red hair and eyes that were hawk-like. He would treat Una as if she was his own daughter, though at the time he had no children of his own. He would take Una to the open sea to fish, hunt with her in the cold mountains of Ard Skellige and he would even take her to Skellige's sacred tree Gedyneith where the druid's of the Isles resided. Throughout those years Una would learn about Skelligen customs and religions, such as the goddess Freya.

In contrast to the North, the Islanders were predominantly free and possessed rights nearly equal to those of the jarls and kings who lead them. The gap between higher and lower classes was milder. While being able to speak Common Speech, they also had their own language, the Skellige jargon, based on the Hen Llinge. It wasn't unusual for Una to work/play alongside other children that weren't of noble birth. At first it was hard to get used to the Skelligan language, but eventually she would start to pick it up.

As a teenager, Una took some time to get used to court once more after the freedom of Skellige. She was expected to behave as a Princess should, and was kept away from boys.

She would end up acting out and rebelling in little ways, such as sneaking out or bunking off of boring lessons or church. One one of these occasions, she met a peasant girl named Elena of Scalla. Una and Elena would spend time together, going to taverns or exploring outside. They became very fond of one-another over the 3 years, and would often meet up in secret. Elena was Una's first crush.

One day, after spending a lovely day at the Palace, Elena headed home...and did not return.

Una asked the guards and her parents to no avail. Even the people at the taverns would just parrot that they "hadn't seen her in a while."Una searched the places where they used to frequent, but Elena was nowhere to be found. Una never saw her again. With the loss of her free-spirited companion, and her growing maturity, Una was eventually tamed.

Una reached 16, and was expected to find a husband. There were several choices, but the match was settled with the young King Reginald of Rivia. The marriage unified the two kingdoms.

Reginald was romantic and loving, but a known womaniser. Una and Reginald would race on horseback, and go hunting together. He was a very open book. Just and fair- refused bribes. He was however prone to having affairs. She was aware that he had affairs with her maids of honour.

At least 2 illegitimate children were born. Both were girls and were sent away to become Priestesses. The mothers were paid off (crowns equal to the weight of the children). Reginald travelled to one of the temples in Temeria and gave them both to the care of a priestess of Melitele, named Nenneke. Onyx was an apology gift from Reginald in 1252.

Reginald spent more time with Una after that, doing his best to be a good husband rather than king.

>Insert the joke that became canon where tickle-monster Reginald chases Una. Una runs full-pelt through the palace, alarming servants, hotly pursued by king. "Dignity, what is dignity. Now is the time to escape. Dignity can be reclaimed in the future" Guards: "WTF IS WRO- oh.. the king. Uhh, let's pretend we didn't see that."

Una was heartbroken when Reginald passed away- he may have been an idiot, but he was her idiot. She was even more heartbroken to discover he had been murdered.

There were other suitors within the last 8 years, but no-one was able to turn Una's head so far, except for one elven man named Maddox. Maddox was originally one of the men of the court.

In a position of power, Maddox had secretly exchanged one of the gems on the Royal crown with an emerald that caused individuals in the vicinity to it to start to slowly wither away. As Reginald's "illness" took root, even the most careful food-tasters and similar could not find the cause of his poisoning until it was too late.

After Reginald died, Maddox slowly tried to get close to Una, and Una developed deep feelings for him. Maddox had played the long con, 4 years is basically no time to an elf. Maddox had been part of the Scoia'tael, who had murdered Reginald in order to get Maddox close to Una and take over the throne.

Maddox's plot was discovered when the spymaster went through his ledger in his room. Finding several purchases on a regular basis that were being sent out of the capital. Further research showed that these pieces of "bread" that were being bought and handed out near Spalla were indeed weapons being supplied to Scoia'tael units. When he was found out he went out in a blaze of glory. Picking up his sabre and killing as many humans as possible whilst going through the palace before finally being cut down

>Una finally found him fighting guards already bloodied, on the brink of death and unrepentant...and dealt the final blow herself. She beheaded him first, then in a rare heated fury plunged her sword through his heart. His room and his belongings were gone without a trace after that.

There used to be more non-humans in the Court, but after the plot was revealed, it was found that many were interconnected, and so had to be removed... One of the other courtiers had taken the blame, and so taken the heat off for the rest of the Scoia'tael followers.

Losing their father when the boys were so young may have had an effect on them, but Una was determined to take up both roles as best she could.

Una has been surrounded by men her whole life, and had developed rather a resigned approach to them, men and boys alike. Thus far, she's still searching for one to break the mould...but who's she kidding. She always falls for the idiots.

- Campaign begins.

Quotes

"You all thought that Belagorn would win in the bout...many of you bet on him, for his strength, his brawn...but as you all saw, size is not the only factor! There are ways to trump a larger enemy...there is always a smarter route to triumph. Do not fear-the battle is not over until it is over!"

(In a prison cell) "What do we have you in for?" "Being Queen."

"I'm no plaything of some god!!"

 (To Gascon) "Songbird?!"

(To Gascon) "Your duke of dogs, Earl of Mutts, High king of Huckleberries, His trampy highness, His sparky Lordship, Gascon...would you do me the kind favour of getting me out of this hellhole?"

(Before a duel) "How about you take me on and we'll see just how much of a bitch I can be?"

"If he’d have died...I would have used the flame you desire so much to render this town into ashes."

"What in Melitele's left ass cheek is going on out here?!?"

"Worshipping is for gods. I am no god."

"If you expose your belly, then you're going to get your guts ripped out."

Faust of Brill

Faust is my appointed mage. He's worked for me for about 2 years, joining in 1265. I chose Faust as my mage because I have bad relations with the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, and rumours of his skills had reached me. I sent out runners and scouts in search of a mage, and heard rumours from villagers about a "wandering tower that pieces the clouds but is never in the same place", with a mage no-one had spoken to, all his work done by runners.

One day I sent an escort asking for his services. I expected to be denied by the secretive man, but for some reason he accepted and joined my court. The tower vanished, not seen again. The renown of the mage began to falter.

Faust is an elusive man. Despite having worked at the Court for 2 years, he has been reluctant to open up. Perhaps our closer quarters will allow him to see I'm just another person, and make him feel more at ease.

He's warmed up somewhat since we've...grown closer, but there's still a hesitance to him. Something holds him back.

Melovié Di Virmout Of Toussaint

Melovié is an interesting addition to the party. She joined us after running away from a Nilfgaardian camp, where she had murdered her previous charge, a mage who "defiled her honour" by performing nefarious deeds.

After spending some time as a semi-prisoner, she was determined to prove herself, and threw herself into battle and protected me. Feeling somewhat at a loose end, she's sworn herself to protect me, feeling that my cause is just. Was that too hasty? Perhaps, but she says she is certain, so who am I to argue?

She's slowly opened up over time. Ever the noble and honourable, but with a sense of good humour too. A little naïve at times, but a powerful ally to have on our side...as long as she stays that way.

Belagorn Troyden

Belagorn is my alchemist. He has worked for me for about 3 years, joining in 1264.

I was travelling to Novagrad, Redania as a visit. As I was returning home, something was obscuring the road, so we took a different path. Suddenly there were shrieks, horses pulled, men disappearing. I looked out my carriage to find myself alone, with my carriage teetering off of a cliff. Suddenly, a stranger rescued me...Belagorn. He escorted me to the closest city as aid. I knighted him for his aid, and made him a count of my lands.

Belagorn is highly intelligent, and I value his input, but he is prone to being oblivious when in social situations. His run-in with the Wild Hunt was terrible. He suffered greatly from the lost time, and I'm sorry I wasn't able to protect him.

I hope he fares better in Crumhorn with Andrea. Though I despise the woman, at least we can agree over Belagorn. Some down time and alchemy should be good for him.
