Black Diamond was one of the original two gems created, along with White Diamond. Together they created more gems, Black shaping them from raw materials and White giving them life. But while White embraced perfection, Black loved the flaws in their creations. They are a scientist at heart, and find fusion, off-colors, and other imperfections fascinating. The first few gems were shaped personally by Black's hands, including Blue and Yellow Diamond. But eventually a way to make gems with machines was found, and Black was rendered obsolete. In the end, because of this and White and Black's differences in ideology, White told Black to leave the galaxy to find new planets for them to get raw materials from. White tried to replace Black with Pink Diamond, but was disappointed that the new diamond seemed to value imperfection in the same way her predecessor did. Someday, Black will return to the Homeworld, and reclaim their throne.

Their court includes Black Pearl, Tourmaline, Onyx, and Black Quartz.
