Zen owns a record and memorabilia shop downtown in a huge city, commonly picked on by Eggman's pawn robots. He lives on the top floor, all others housing different subgenres of music records and merchandise. While each floor does have stair access, customers typically don't use them and instead, ask Zen to use his ears to fly up and pick out his recommendations, or from a catalog he keeps on the counter of the base shop. The building is 7 stories high, the 7th being Zen's humble living quarters which is permanently locked to all by a door on the top floor.

Due to an oppressive family life, he's had a hard time coming out of his shell and discovering himself. Zen dyes his fur and wears makeup as an expression of rebellion and to fit the whole "punk" look which is common in shop patrons. Of course, he tries hitting on the women who come in to appear slick and cool, but his sexuality is pretty obvious- being bisexual gay-leaning- possibly due to constant female rejection and general bad luck. Or maybe just his personality. Zen does tend to be incredibly hotheaded and quick-tempered. He's loud and rambunctious, all side effects from an incredibly sheltered and pressuring home life.

One day, under an especially tense attack in his area from Eggman's pawns, a hole is blown into the top floor as he's sleeping. In a panic, he flies down to the HQ of the local rebuilding committee, demanding it be fixed right away like the spoiled childish guy he is. While everyone else is scowling at him for yelling, he notices a big, broad jackalope calmly staring at him- Brawley, he later finds out- is the single volunteer to go assess the damage. As Brawley smacks away a couple small bots and the pair get up to see the damage, the jackalope quietly nods and says he'll be back- bout an hour later, he returns with a woven rope net. As Brawley singlehandedly removes the giant remnant of bot bits from the wall (that must have been slung into the building from an explosion elsewhere), he slings up the net to cover the hole.

As Zen starts to fuss again, saying bugs can still get in through the small gaps between the rope, Brawley smiles at him and assures he'll come back later to fix it, and at that, Zen starts to feel something stirring in him.
