Cerine Morgwen Carasi (WIP)

Cerine is an all around mage who has specialised in one of two branches of her setting's necromancy. She works together with Marive as Adventurer and travels through the world, mainly on foot. While open and friendly she doesn't disclose a lot of her past and keeps a lot of it and her thoughts to herself. She only reveals facts about herself bit by bit or by being asked but she usually manages to answer only with the minimal amount of information necessary.

A lot of people think Cerine is the child of an Alder and a human. Especially her pointy yet more humanlike ears leads credence to it. Still, she doesn't show the usual ageing Half-Alder show more or less. Her true age is unknown, yet she travels with Marive for about seventy years and seems to hold great knowledge about plenty historical events and ancient civilisations.

Personality

Cerine is a very compassionate and kind person. If people are in trouble, she'll help. If someone has a problem, she'll seek solutions. Yet, she won't force herself on others. Always soft-spoken and smiling she seems to be rarely bothered by anything. Any inconveniences will only prompt her to adapt her way of approach and no matter how dire the situation, Cerine keeps optimistic. Yet, this positive outlook can come off as naive. It also doesn't help that she usually acts very childlike and can be easily distracted.

This carefree nature seems to hide something else within her.

Her social skills aren't that good, which more often than not causes her to say sometimes insensitive things without her noticing. People usually forgive her since it's apparent that she doesn't harbour any malicious intent but this doesn't exempt her from causing misunderstandings. Cerine also sometimes offers strange, even alien sounding advice, which can sound, depending on the situation, rather off-putting.

Since Cerine knows her own abilities and is confident in them, she can enter dangerous situations as if it's nothing. This appears to other people as if she doesn't has a sense for danger, since she'll approach those situations with a certain amount of playfulness and carefreeness. But, should the situation become dire, she becomes serious and determined to get everyone back to safety.

Abilities

Sanguine Necromancy

Sanguine Necromancy is one of the two branches of Necromancy in the setting and less frowned upon than its sister Spiritual Necromancy.

A sanguine necromancer uses their own blood to reanimate the remains of dead animals by dripping some on the head of the body. As a rule the body needs an intact or semi-intact nervous system and the head needs to be unharmed as to allow the user to move the remains. A broken neck, for example, forces the mage to extent their will onto the whole body instead of just the brain, which forced the mage to concentrate nearly their whole mind on the task. The necromancer's blood works as anchor for their will and allows them to move the body.

Since Sanguine Necromancy doesn't force the deceased's soul back into the body it's considered less abhorrent and can be learned either at the Arkania, the main center of all magic users, or by being an understudy of a mage, who's specialised in this art.

Cerine is one of a few recognised necromancers. She can not only animate small animals but also beings larger than her. She's also able to view the last moments of deceased beings by touching the head. Despite her expertise she rarely uses this ability, although she has no problem talking about it with others.

Other Magic

Cerine has also a great knowledge about basic magic and a few other specialisations. She's mainly a good healer and a fairly decent offensive mage. But her most important ability is her vast knowledge of herbal medicine, magic ores and creatures as well as a great understanding of the inner workings of natural phenomenon. Although the mages of the Arkania value such abilities they won't work with her since she never discloses who her mentor was.

Alchemy

In the setting every mage also has to learn some aspects of alchemy, since some practices rely on alchemical fundamentals. Cerine's abilities in this art are about average. She can appraise minerals and magic-items as well as brew a few easy mixtures for the refinement of certain weapons and items.

Languages

Cerine can read and speak the common language called Ganorian, which is used across the whole continent and originates from the old human language as well as the language of the Alder. She can also speak and read fluent Alder, Dwarfish as well as Old Dwarfish.

Also, as a mage, she can read the Divine Lettering, which is the language used by the gods to describe the true essence of things. Only the gods can truly speak Divine, which is the name of the language. If a mortal were to try to speak it, they would not only harm themself but also everything and everyone around them within hearing range.

The Staff

This is a very rare magic-enhancing staff. It's about 1 m (3'3") in hight and can float and follow Cerine upon her discretion. Since she can do powerful magic on her own, Cerine likes to rely on the staff mostly for light and storage. To store something "inside" the staff, she has to push it against the Orb and in order to retrieve something she has to touch the Orb and think about the object she wants. Note: It can happen, that she forgets something within the Orb, so she empties the Orb about once every six months. Stored objects can't spoil and won't age within the Orb, but they can get contaminated with strong magic, which can render most magical Items unusable/unstable.

The most important part of the staff and the secret behind its magic-amplifying abilities is the Orb. It's called a true Animusorb and holds at about two to three Shades, which are demon like entities in her world. Those Shades are considered "tamed" and are about as dangerous as Cerine allows them to be. Since Shades always seek out purposes, this arrangement is symbiotic in nature and comes at no harm to either party. Usually the Orb doesn't betray its true nature but sometimes one can see one to three blinking eyes appear within it for a few seconds.

The wood itself was grown via magical means around the Orb. It's somewhat alive and constantly shifts its form. Since this shifting process takes a long time no one really notices it and thinks the staff always looked the way it does at any given moment. Hidden within the bottom of the staff is a normal short-sword. Cerine mainly uses it as last resort, which happens very rarely.

The Herbal Bag

It's a small bag impervious to all magic so it can keep the magical herbs from loosing their potency and for it to be stored inside her staff. Cerine has made the bag herself and repaired it countless times with different patches, of which she always has some with her, since they need to be magic repellent as well. While not looking like much it's a very expensive item since the process of making any material magic repellent is time and material consuming and can be only done by the best mages and/or alchemists.

Cerine usually carries plenty of common and uncommon, usually dried, herbs with her. All neatly bundled up and tied together. Most of them are against common things like colds, stomach aches and infections. She also carries a few special herbs she needs to treat Marive's nightmares with, among which are the berries inside the small violet pouch. Those berries are only consumable in small doses and only once they've been cooked or heated up over a certain amount of time.

The Sewing Kit

This is just a normal sewing kit with a few needles, pins, some yarn and a pair of fabric scissors. It's a heirloom from her mother, although it was her father, who taught Cerine how to sew, knit and darn. Cerine is also fond of embroidery and does occasionally do some herself. Overall she uses it for repairs, although she could easily fix everything with magic, she prefers to do it by hand.
