Profile

Space Oddity's story starts posthumously, where one of the player characters unearths their skeleton as part of her archaeology job.  Without any memories and only just barely aware of their situation as an actual ghost, Space Oddity hitches a ride out of the desert by possessing various inanimate objects, eventually meeting the main party as a result.  They help acquaint them to the idea of Stands, work backwards to figure out their identity, and even build a body for them out of a mannequin!

Known Backstory:

Space Oddity was once a completely normal human astronaut named Bunny Thompson.  Her final mission, 10 years ago, was to retrieve a meteorite and bring it back for testing.  The crew secured the space rock, but an unknown, engine-related problem occurred on reentry, dooming them all.  It's assumed by the players that Bunny developed her Stand in this moment of panic and used it to save her life (or, her existence, at the very least), possessing her spacesuit.

Either the very nature of Space Oddity's ability made them a blank slate, or the impact into the desert itself gave them amnesia, because they don't remember much of anything beyond the above.  Dazed and confused, they stumbled over to two very frightened teenagers, who promptly ran away at seeing a "space zombie."  After aimless wandering for an unknown duration, at some point they tripped during a dust storm.  Still without their full faculties, they accepted this fate motionlessly, and were buried away from the impact site.

There they existed for almost the entirety of the decade, barely aware, until the party found them.

In-Game Timeline (Act 1):

Needless to say, Space Oddity felt indebted to the player characters, and refused to stray from their side.  They acted as backup, hanging out at the same locales as the players do, exchanging information, and sometimes tagging along on investigations.  They wanted nothing more than to make themself useful.

They visited a "ghost hotel" with the party, featuring what seemed to be, well, actual ghosts.  Said ghosts were all distinctly different than Space Oddity, which only gave them more questions about their own nature.  As the mystery surrounding the city deepened further, revealing a mass surveillance operation, Space Oddity couldn't help but feel alienated.  Who can blame them?  The city technically didn't even exist when they were alive, and now that they've been rediscovered and brought back into the world, it feels like one nonstop whirlwind of life-changing discoveries.  Slowly, self-doubt crept in; they were unsure how they could really be of use to the party when their personal mysteries seemed so far away from the players' own urgent ones.

In-Game Timeline (Act 2):

A mysterious Stand called「Endless Fantasy」overwrote the memories of parts of the city and characters' relationships while simultaneously skipping time forward a couple months.  The players and NPCs were victims alike, and eventually regained varying degrees of knowledge of what had been reset.  Space Oddity seems to have been divided from the party completely, instead taking up residence in an abandoned former megamall, as if this is where they've lived the entire 10 years after their fatal crash.  Their main hobby is possessing the decrepit merchandise in order to scare would-be ghost hunters away.  When the party came across them, a sense of deja vu washed over them both.  Space Oddity appeared to be confusing past and present memories, attacking the party, saying they "abandoned" them.  Is this anger directed at their old space crew, or is it anger directed at the reality warp causing the party to be technically estranged to them for a couple months?  Who knows!  They're confused too!  Whatever the case, they've been reunited with the party, which is the important part.  But what about everyone's memories...?

Ability: 「Space Oddity

Posthumous, Phenomenon, Bound, Sentient

Space Oddity is a Stand bound to the very soul of its user, Bunny Thompson, essentially making the two one.  However, SO only has a hazy recollection of Bunny's memories, perhaps because as a Stand, they only "knew" her for a short time.  SO can move into closeby items and effectively "possess" them, taking control of their functions.  SO's possession makes items more "durable" and resistant to physical attacks and breakage.  Since they are a Stand, they cannot be heard by a "normal" person unless they possess an item that can transmit audio. There is a limit to the size and complexity of the items they can possess; they could possess the steering mechanism of a car, for example, but not the engine, exterior, and the radio as well.

As the soul of a deceased individual, Space Oddity has no real appearance.

Other:

  • Their abilities were largely inspired by the game Ghost Trick.
  • Their color palette was based off a keycap set.
  • Their previous identity, Bunny Thompson, has a few musical references in her name: Echo & The Bunnymen and Thompson Twins primarily, though "Thompson" also acts as a reference to Major Tom, the character featured in "Space Oddity."
  • The players picked blonde for their hair color; red highlights were added in the art to make the ponytail look like a rocket trail.
  • There's a joke amongst TTRPG players that every party eventually "adopts" an NPC.  Space Oddity is that NPC.
  • Character art album cover background reference
