Kale lost most of his family members in the ongoing wars. He lived homeless for a long time, maintaining a very bleak outlook on the world. Daten had a program where they rounded up young men/people in attempts to turn them into fighters. Kale, both desperate and broken, found himself trapped. He screwed up so much during the training he was deemed generally unfit for regular work and they gave him grunt work instead. When he faced Shi Teffo he made a plea for something to change, that maybe if he were able to prove himself he could live a better life. He was among the last to be granted any powers, and he is rather displeased with the ones that he got. Shi Teffo still gives him grunt work, but he appreciates not being harassed for the most part. Eventually Rowan is captured and he has a fondness for him.
