Blaine has been on duty for as long as he can remember. He came into his position in the afterlife when Death offered him a job. Most often he is aloof and insensitive but has strangely enough evidently grown a soft spot for the sneaky spirits trying to cross the border.
Their escape attempts keep him mildly entertained in the long work hours. Most of the spirits, after getting caught by Blaine, usually give up and chitter away, back into the Void.
The only time he is able to venture into the plane of the living is when the spirits happen to slip past the border and escape there. Blaine appreciates the landscape of the living, sometimes thinking he could let some spirits 'accidentally' sneak past his watch to be able to transverse into the land of the living, but his sense of duty roots far deeper than any personal desires.
Death gives Blaine a few days off sometimes, content with his loyalty and hard-working demeanor.
During his day-offs, Blaine often visits a little creature named Tap among the lilypads and duckweed. They get along well, despite their personalities being quite the opposite.
