Background Information

[tw: abuse, referenced sexual abuse, fire, murder, good lord help him]

Cassian is proud of many aspects of his life, but his upbringing on Volatus isn’t one of them. His family was upper class, but his father, Hugo Astor, always acted as though they were nobility. He’d always wanted his family to gain a higher status and to secure a legacy of some kind. He was an obsessive, greedy man, and when one of his children came out a Zamazenta like him, his plans began to see results.

“Our family legacy is bigger than you or me,” his father had said to Cassian, now at the tender age of 4, “And you are a key to that. Zamazenta aren’t common here, and we can make that part of ourselves important.” Cassian hadn’t understood it at the time, but like the rest of his siblings he’d had to go through lessons and training to be just like the nobles. Chin up, shoulders back, spine straight. Smile, and tilt your head just so, and don’t speak unless told. A line of curtseys and dresses in front of an instructor, and no tolerance for anything deemed less than perfect.

Cassian’s mother, Kristen Astor, was far less strict, but slowly his father snuffed out the fire of resistance in her, and she smiled off to the side, and helped in ways she could without resulting in the older Zamazenta’s ire. When Cassian was old enough to start learning to cook, she ushered him into the kitchen and taught him recipes she’d learned from her parents. She didn’t get to make them often anymore, but they were always a nice treat. She would whisper to her children about how she’d teach them what was really important in life, but just don’t tell Papa. She taught them music, different ways he can wear his hair, ways to have fun under the noses of the men of the house. Cassian enjoyed his mother’s company, but couldn’t help but feel anger burning over her passive gaze under his father’s harsh commands.

Upon turning 13, the standard changed. Cassian’s hair was straightened, he was put into a nicer dress, reminded of his etiquette, and his father sat him down in the tea room, reminding him of his manners and to give the nobles coming over a good impression. The man coming was very important and could potentially offer one of his son’s as a husband. Cassian’s stomach clenched, and he’d recently learned quite a bit about bodies and romance and all sorts of things. He hadn’t thought about his father’s discussions with him until now, and he now knew what it meant. When the other family arrived, Cassian figured a yelling at would be better than marriage and family legacies. He ‘accidentally’ spilled the tea, and never made eye contact, and perhaps spoke a little too much. His father was furious after, but Cassian felt a spark of triumph.

It was after that event that Cassian figured that if he was simply terrible at nobility, he’d never have to be worried about his father’s plans. His father was never physical with him beyond roughly adjusting his positioning, but his insults became more vicious, and his lectures became longer. He screamed and swore and blamed Cassian for their family’s future failure. It was worth it. The meetings with other families continued as the years passed, but nobody would bite as he sabotaged each of them. His glances at his father became more smug, but he could also feel his mother’s sad stares at the back of his neck.

At the age of 18, Cassian was the only one of his siblings to have no marriages planned or finished. It was then his father struck gold, and one of the noble men, Dominic Harris. The Thievul man mostly spoke to Cassian’s father in the meeting, speaking of his own desire to raise his family’s status due to being lesser nobles. Cassian made sure the tea was terrible, and perhaps snuck in an old chipped cup to give to him instead of a new one. He could see his father biting his tongue. But to Cassian’s dismay, a week later they met again. And then again the next month. The fourth meeting, they discussed the wedding, leaving Cassian in the dark that it had even been agreed on. Cassian clutched at his stomach, thoughts racing. He was going to be just like his mother, forced to bear child after child and locked in the house. A legacy built on his blood and captivity. He excused himself to the bathroom with little more than a strained smile.

Cassian agonized in privacy, counting the minutes he spent away from the two men ruining his life. Was there nothing he could do to escape this? He was scared. And perhaps a little more than desperate. Cassian snuck around, but it didn’t take long for him to find a box of matches and plenty of flammable material. Hell, he’d doused it in alcohol just to make sure. Cassian hastily shoved his mother out of the house, much to her protest, and lit the pile right by the back door. A quick rush to the front to lock it shut, and the job would soon be done. His mother nearly screamed, but he hurried her away with the promise of freedom. The linoone had cried, but done so. He burned her life down, but she’d no longer be under another man’s thumb.

Cassian watched his home burn, unable to hear anything besides the roar of the flames.

He left long before anyone came to try to put out the fire. Cassian had barely braved the time to grab essentials and some of his father’s clothes. He didn’t particularly hate dresses, but he was rather sick of being forced into them. It was easy enough to use some of the cash Cassian had stolen from his father’s room to pay someone to whisk him away from Volatus.

The next several years were dedicated to Cassian finding himself. He cut his hair short, chose a whole new name for himself, and set out. He discovered a love for robotics and coding, found music he liked, figured out the types of clothes that appealed to him. He finally got to make decisions for himself, and he was ecstatic. There was only so much money left from the stolen amount he got from his father, so he took whatever jobs he could. Many were unsavory, some even illegal, but he would make it.

Things went on like this all through Cassian’s 20’s and into his 30’s. He became good enough at robotics to build things all on his own, small but complicated in their own right. He went all over different systems, often being around Caligo, Ferrum, Sol, and Tempest for work. Slowly, Cassian was becoming irritated by many of his various employers. They so often spoke down to him, as if they knew his craft better than he did, and several harassed him often. It was one employer’s lack of care for Cassian’s wellbeing that got him caught and arrested by a bounty hunter one day.

Prison, to put it simply, sucked. Going back and forth between being bored or irritated out of his mind and completely terrified left Cassian with enough whiplash to last him a lifetime. He hated the way most of the inmates looked at him, but not more than now the guards did. Showers were few and far inbetween out of paranoia, and Cassian’s hair was breaking since he couldn’t take care of it properly. Would it kill them to give him a durag or some good shampoo? Yes, apparently, it would.

Everything changed the day he met Kingsley Love during dinner. The Kyurem had picked an argument with someone, and casually told them to fuck off and endured an onslaught of unsavory things that Cassian would rather not repeat. Cassian had heard some rumors around about the man, and had come to the conclusion that they were much alike. So perhaps he was risking things a bit by firing off some choice insults of his own, much to the delight of the Kyurem. In the end, they got into a scuffle, and Cassian’s fork had gotten lodged quite nicely in the asshole’s hand. They had to wait a bit to talk properly thanks to the guard’s intervention and their separation for a day, but their next meeting was well worth the wait. Kingsley smiled, all teeth, and Cassian put a few winks of his own in, and the two became fast friends. A week later, they broke out in an adrenaline rushed haze and a stolen ship, leaving the prison in disarray and confusion.

They had plenty of time on the little ship to talk and get to know each other better. Their hideouts were rather far apart, and neither were too keen on keeping the stolen vessel for safety. For the time being, they headed towards Kingsley’s destination. They sat at the cramped table, tending to their wounds, when Kingsley spoke up. He wanted to start a crew, and they worked so well together. He said he felt something. A connection. They could be partners. And not much else resonated with Cassian the way that did. A partner. Someone to rely on. The lonely void in him ached, and he wanted it so badly. He wanted somewhere to belong. Instead, he grinned and extended his hand to the other man, asking when he could start.

And for the next 6 years, Kinsley and Cassian became partners in crime. They didn’t go about their work the same way most criminals did. It was less about money, and more about freedom and fun, living without the restrictions of the societies they came from. Cassian’s work flourished, and he became the happiest he’d ever been. Cassian Wick was a man tired of being angry and scared, and now he never had to be that again.

“I said, brother, if you only knew

You’d wish that you were in my shoes”

TLDR;
- Born and raised on Volatus in an upper class family

- Had a strict upbringing, being taught to be a noble by his father who wanted to raise the family status and create a legacy. When he became a teenager, his father told him he was going to be married off to a noble man.

- Shockingly! Cassian isn't super into that! But doesn't really seem to have a choice and hopes that he just doesn't end up being good enough so that he's given up on

- That kinda backfires and his father cracks down on him for it even harder

- Once he hits 18, his father found a noble man that was interested in marrying him, and schedules for them to meet

- As the meetings go on, it kinda hits him that he can't get out of it and he's going to be forced to be married off and to be a brood mother, essentially

- Sets fire to the house and kills both his father and suitor, but helps his mother escape.

- Runs away, both from the situation and from Volatus as a whole

- He goes around various systems and planets such as Caligo, Ferrum, Sol, and Tempest.

- He gets any kind of job that he can to survive.

- Spent this time honing his robotics skills for years and years

- Finally got caught for his low, but slowly rising bounty from illegal jobs, and thrown in prison.

- Does his best to survive. Doesn't instigate fights much, but usually puts an end to them or puts people in their place out of necessity to survive.

- Honestly getting sick of it, and happens to meet Kingsley Love

- The two hit it off real well and pull off a big escape with each other

- They agree to work together from then on and have been doing so for six years

- Along that time, Cassian has honed his robotics skills, and has become a lot more fun loving and relaxed, now that he’s able to be himself without fear.
